I bought my first "Traditional" folder this past week in the A.G. Russell Barlow and I've gotta say that for the admission price of less than $35 they're really hard to beat. I was mainly interested because my father and grandfather both carried a Barlow so I wanted to give an updated version a try. I've had great luck dealing with A.G. Russell in the past so it just made sense to go with his version plus the pic of the Barlow in his catalog caught my eye (I hate it when that happens <grin>).

I bought the one with the Ebony Rucarta and it looks great, it opens and closes very smooth...I'm working on getting mine to open with one hand (I'll have it down soon). Anyway, I imagine that this Barlow will be seeing a lot of pocket time, I seldom if ever "need" more knife than this and it carries so easy that you don't know its there in your pocket.

Kudos to Mr. Russell on yet another terrific folder.

Sounds great, how about some pics fellers? ;)

All I can give at the moment is a link to a pic of all three: http://www.agrussell.com/images/Biggest/RUS-CB13YD-co-er.jpg

Even though I've always bought and ACTUALLY USED <grin> so-called tactical style knives because they have pocket clips and thumbstuds I can certainly understand why this style of knife is so popular. There's a certain classiness to its simplicity and like I said before, it's all the knife I really need. Of course, since when do we knife lovers stop buying when we have all we really need?

I just realized that the last knife I bought before this Barlow was a brand new SMF...that's a bit of a range for ya. :D

Here y'go. Nice looking knives :)

I really got to try one of Mr AG Russell's knives. The Barlow and the gunstocks looks great.

KG

I was looking at the larger of the two version's of the Gunstock, I don't want to get carried away but I may need to try one of those as well. Don't know, I think this Barlow is going to hold me over for a while. What a sweet deal for so little money.

A couple of weeks ago we stopped in at AG Russell's retail place in Rogers. Mr. Russell showed us lots of knives and the Barlow he makes is real nice in the hand and with a lock on it that is just as solid as any I have ever tried . It is on my list for Father's Day. We ended up getting two of the Cowboy slip joint knives (his Soddie style knife, one for each of my boys for a late Christmas gift. It was fun to talk with Mr. Russell, he is a gentleman and makes A1 knives.

I have one of the gunstocks and a big sowbelly trapper along with 4-5 other A.G. Russell knives. That barlow may well be might next one I get.

Helped a friend move today and decided to bring/use my new A.G. Russell Barlow and I lost count of how many boxes were cut open, strings and ropes that were cut and the Barlow preformed beautifully. There were two other guys that were also helping with the move and they both asked to see the knife after I'd used it all day and one asked where he could get one for himself.

The funny thing is I had also brought my favorite Strider SMF (w/CPM-154) just in case it was needed but it saw no use today at all...the Barlow handled everything with no sweat.

No doubt it is a dandy knife. I was really surprised when I got mine as the other Barlows I have are all full flat ground as opposed to hollow ground on AG's model. The grind is thin on this one (comparatively) and between my three other Barlows this is by far and away the best slicer.

I must admit that I know very little about "traditional's" but I did see that the Barlow that my grandfather left me is FF ground and the A.G is hollow ground and slices great. I didn't know what to expect with regards to the the edge holding ability of this steel but I was pleasantly surprised. I used it all day during the move and the edge held up fine.

I'm not going to lie, I usually carry "tactical" knives (not fond of that term) yet thus far, I haven't even noticed the Barlow in my pocket while carrying it (a huge plus) and its handled all of my cutting jobs with zero problems. Now if I could just get better at opening it with one hand as I saw in their video. I feel like I may be applying too much pressure to the side of the blade when opening it that way. Anyway, I've never had so much fun with such an inexpensive knife and there is something about carrying the same type of knife that my father and grandfather always carried. I don't know...I guess it brings back nice memories.

I'd like to get hold of one of these, have to look into the possibilities of shipping to Euroland.

Thanks, Will

Not a huge fan of AG's bargain slipjoints. I'm sure they are okay for the price but not for me.

Thankfully, you won't ever have to buy one.

And really, what does that have to do with a discussion about AGR's Barlows? "OK for the price" is a pointless comment made from ignorance since it is obvious you haven't owned an AGR branded slipjoint.

I think it would be great if you could keep the discussion OT and about the actual knife and not about your personal likes and dislikes about the manufacturer's brand.

Overreact much? I prefer flat ground and carbon steel on a Barlow and the traditional Barlow without a lock. I have and love the Workmans Barlow from AG in yellow bone. It just doesn't happen to be the "bargain brand" from AG. It is a German Made slippie. I was waiting for more along that line but AG decided to go in a different direction which I don't particularly like. Sorry to upset your slobberfest over these knives but I'm allowed to have an opinion.

Since when is praising a companies inexpensive knife, a type I've haven't used since I was a child, a slobberfest? How can pointing out that a companies under $50 lockback knife preforms very well be a bad thing?

Like I said, I own and like some of AG Russell branded knives. To each his own. If I offended you I apologize.
