A.G. Russell Barlow Lockback

Like I said, I own and like some of AG Russell branded knives. To each his own. If I offended you I apologize.

To each his own what? One of my most often carried EDC's is the original A.G.Russell Acies (buttery smooth and carries like a dream) but I still think it's good to point out when a company is making great knives at an incredibly low price point.

No need for an apology, I just don't understand why one would accuse anyone of having a "slobberfest" on Bladeforums for pointing out a nice knife at a very low price point. Ever read any reviews here? Ever see anyone excited abut a new knife? (regardless of price)...it's really not that unusual and I don't generally see anyone called out for their praise.

Good to know that you like A.G's Workmans Barlow, I've never held one but I'm sure its a great knife.

Other than the Kershaw Cryo, the A.G Russell Lockback Barlow is the least expensive knife I own...maybe that's why I'm so impressed with it. I still wish I was better at opening it with one hand but practice makes perfect.

There is a reason why they are so incredibly inexpensive which is why I don't care for them. I don't care how much other people like them, I don't. I also own and love the AG Russell Premium Scout. That's another sweet knife. I'm not going to comment on this thread any further.

Ok guys. You know who you are. Let's not get carried away please.

And if you have an issue with country of origin, you need to stay out of threads about knives made in other countries.

I’m not seeking an argument with anyone and I certainly don’t want to upset the moderators, if my being so impressed with a low priced Barlow was over the top I apologize. I remain very impressed with it and feel that it’s great that A.G. Russell cares enough to bring his designs to many different price points.

KLJT, it wasn't you being spanked over place of origin or price point.

I understand, yet I didn't mean nor want to raise the ire of anyone else here with anything I say or have said. It's 2013, the world has changed and hopefully our mindsets can change with it.

I thought KLJTech's post was great. I agree.

As a sidebar to that that thought, if anyone can successfully reimagine a traditional knife and keep it traditional, it would be AG Russell.

The thing I personally like about this knife is that as a Barlow design, it shows its roots but also has design differences that make it stand out. I have an old Keen Kutter that belonged to my grandfather that is (according to my Dad) from the 20s or 30s. I have a Dan Burke Barlow, a Rough Rider and a Kabar Barlow. All are essentially the same knife design as most Barlows, with the Dan Burke standing out with the sheepsfoot second blade.

No one seems to be able to get as much blade in a folder case as AGR. Plenty of usable surface on the blade, hollow ground, and the steel seems to be much harder than the other knives I own that are bladed with it. It even sharpens differently. And honoring the long tradition of a Barlow being a workingman's knife, it is completely affordable.

It's my EDC rfp since the last week of August! (His wharnecliffe sowbelly is in my rbp as EDC too!)

The hollow grind is great, very slim and very sharp on that Barlow. It's a great size too.

Midnight hit the nail on the head with regards to what I love most about Mr. Russell's designs, they always have more blade than you can imagine in the handle. I like it so much that it's now become a pet peeve on other brands when I see handles that could have held so much more blade. I understand at times it's a design choice by others but I LOVE the usefulness of having the most blade possible within a given design.

Well that black one looks nice to me and since I already own a workmans barlow from AGR and was about to order a swayback wharnie anyway only 35$ more sounds like the deal of the year to me. I will come back in a week or two with pictures and a comparison to just see what kind of deal it is.

I have the Cowboy sodbuster type knife that willseeyalater mentioned above. I have quite a few soddies and I'd choose the Cowboy over any of them. l was planning on getting the Rancher but after reading this thread I've decided to get one of these Barlows as well. Thanks for the find, KLJTech.

I have the yellow one........it is well made and slices trough food easily...I am a carbon steel fan, but I think I like this one because it is stainless ...probably gonna order a wood one for my dad later on this year.

I think I'm going to get one too. I handled them at Blade Show 2012. They are very solid, but at the time my mind was set on some other knives.

Mine came in today and went straight into my pocket. I cannot believe how clean and well made these knives are for the $$!

I wish I could rationalize a "reason" to get the big sunfish and folding hunter...

I know what you mean, I've used the Barlow just about every day since it arrived and love it. Now I have my eye on A.G's 2012 Texas Ranger...see what happens?

Oh and I may have a bit of problem with my Barlow, my wife has taken notice of it and Sunday was using it to cut tags off of things she'd bought at the mall and then said that she found the knife very useful but not intimidating. I wasn't expecting her to care about nor use my new toy. :p
