A.G. Russell Bicentennial knife.

description from A.G. himself

Description from A.G. himself:
When I bought the tiny Hen & Rooster firm in 1975, among the many things I found in the factory was a knife with a coffin shaped handle. This knife had not been made in years and was bladed in a way odd to an American eye. It had a large blade at the small end and a small blade at the large end. In my mind, I saw a bold saber ground blade with a strongly cut swedge and a long pull as a single blade knife. With the 200th Anniversary of our country coming up in less than a year, I knew that such a knife would make a much loved reminder of the successes 200 years had brought to our country.

I found a company who made tooling for embossed advertising knives. Finding that I could get them to soar above their standard quality of work, I encouraged them into this masterpiece of an embossed knife handle. The American Eagle clutching the USA shield on the front of the handle and the USA shield and 1776 - 1976 in a furled ribbon on the back of handle was conceived by me and executed by the well known and talented scrimshander, Bill Shotts.

In 1976, to commemorate the American Bicentennial, we made 28 knives with 14kt Gold, 1,000 with Sterling Silver, 2,000 with Brass and 3,000 with Stainless Steel handles. Today, only a quantity of the Brass model remain on our shelves.
