A.G. Russell large sowbelly trapper (Cocobolo)

Calm down. I was just surprised it was made in China as it is a nice looking knife. If you are offended by it being made in China, that seems like a personally problem of yours not mine.
Simple misunderstanding. I don't mind chinese knives at all. But I'm getting sick of people complaining about it all the time. I thought you were trying to start another one of those political complaints.

I apologise for overreacting.

this is mine.

I was doubting between the amber bone and the white....now i want a zulu in white as well...to match and differ.

I have owned one of these and regret gifting it away, this is now on a farm in Northern New Zealand!
One of the nicest actioned knives I have owned, I admire AG Russell, and I dont care where its made because it would have HAD to meet AG's requirements of quality. Just an all round fantastic knife, fit and finish = great, blades are as good as you will get, Factory - very sharp! awesome W&T, all for around $50.00, just how good can it get?

I'm probably going to start a bun fight here but it looks to me as if if you were looking for a slipjoint with similar design characteristics to some of the custom makers out there but didn't have the pennies you could do worse than look at some of these knives.

No fight from me!;) I own the A.G. Russell Regular Curved Jack wharncliffe in jigged bone, the 3-5/8" Gunstock, the 2011 Texas Ranger and I'm (patiently) waiting for the two blade Sowbelly in cocobolo to come back in stock. For the money, these are worth every penny and then some!:)

Spam, i own lots of Customs but i still buy these incredibly well made folders from AGR. Why not ? They are just as well made as most Custom folders and better than some. It is possible to have too many knives, but for a collector that means into the thousands and these big AGR knives are far too exceptional to pass up.

What customs do you own that these China mades are equal to? If you are talking a brand new maker maybe. I could grind down a file and sell it as custom and it would be crap but that doesn't make other knives any better. I think some people get a little too enthusiastic in their praise to justify buying Chinese. It is what it is, a nice knife, for the money. That is why AG has many other knives for ten times the price in his catalogue. These knives couldn't hold a candle to a Bose, Davidson or Erickson and the price reflects that.

Halfrich, Erickson, Davison, Chamblin, Bump, Ohta, Bradshaw, Menefee, Dowell, Ruple, Allen, Morrow, R.Cover, Preston, Menefee, are some of the custom folders i have at present. Multiple examples for most of these makers.
Do you have any of the large AGR folders ?

I must admit I only have American made AG Russell slipjoints. Very well made but not quite to the custom level.

In the above quote I chose my words carefully. I don't claim these knives are on a level with custom makers, neither would Mr Russell I'm sure. I only have one custom knife and I appreciate the small details which show skill and dedication to craft from that maker. I can't help observing however that knives like the one featured in this thread follow similar lines of design to several custom makers. Clean lines, brush finish bolsters and (credit where credit is due) close tolerances.

Ironically, I have a great deal of respect for a custom maker who can achieve those crisp lines and high tolerances without access to high tech milling equipment etc....
