A.G. S30V 110 vs B.P. CPM-154 110

Al,

any idea what that something special is that differentiates it from the S30v ? I guess I could google the two, and do some study on the steels, or more profitable would be a search here. Just do not know really how they differ. But I have found the CPM-154 more to my liking as well.

Well, Durbin, I have a lot of S30V knives and have noticed a couple of things. Many have reported micro-chipping problems with S30V and while I have observed the problem on only one of my knives (not a Buck), I know it exists. Curiously, after a couple of sharpenings, the issue seems to go away. The second thing I noticed about S30V, is that it looses it's 'hair popping' edge quite quickly, but retains a 'working' edge for a very long time.

CPM154 seems to have taken all the positive aspects of 154CM and made them better still. I have always liked 154CM and ATS34 due to the fact that they take a fine edge that seems to be 'toothy'. CPM154 has kept that characteristic, yet seems to take an even finer edge. In fact, the latest BP110 I got was the sharpest 'out of the box' knife I have ever experienced, and I am including Spyderco knives as well. The steel also responds well to Arkansas stones and touches up with no problem. One other curious observation is that 154CM doesn't take a mirror polish without showing some 'grain', yet CPM154 takes a true mirror polish.

Anyway, the above are just my subjective observations. The reality is that both S30V and CPM154 are fine steels that should make any knife affectionado pleased.

A.P.F., I've mirror polished both the steels you mentioned and both take a fine mirror polish w/ no problems. However, I agree w/ you on S30V losing its very sharp edge then maintaining a "working edge" for a long time. S60V respondes identical.
Then I'd have to go w/ Pack Rat on the wobble issue. Its a nit pick. They're both top grade stainless steels, one holds an edge much longer than the other. Nor have I noticed the AG emblem as a detractant, I like it, espically on the sheath. DM

Well, I like them both of them. Not having either, the BP is making me drool more...so there's my vote.

I just went to the BP website an didn't find a 110 with cpm154. Does anyone have a link?
Bob

I have both, and over all I prefer the AG 110....especially once I removed the AG logo from the blade....
