A "gentleman's" fixed blade?

Most of the threads I've seen in this forum, and the knives, deal with folders. And that's all I have, so far. No fixed blades. Yes.

I've been thinking that it might be nice to purchase a small fixed blade knife. The reason I haven't done that so far is that I live in a suburban to urban area. A small pocket knife fits neatly in my jeans. No one even needs to know it's there. I'm not a hunter or a fisherman. My wife's idea of camping is a Holiday Inn Express. But I'd really like a fixed blade that is non-threatening looking a gentleman's fixed blade, so to speak.

Last night while perusing the various options for Moki folders (I had posted a thread yesterday regarding them), I noticed the Banff - a fixed blade with micarta handles, which is available in three sizes. The smallest has a blade of just over 2 inches. I saw a brief video of the knife on youtube - very nice looking. It struck me that that that knife wouldn't be much more threatening looking than my Madison Barlow. Or would it.

So I'd appreciate your thoughts and input - for those of you who live in an area where you don't want a knife that looks at all threatening - do you carry fixed blades? And if so, how and when.

Thanks.

For day-to-day tasks I don't see the need for a fixed blade outside of the kitchen. That is especially true of fixed blades of the type you mentioned -- small knives with correspondingly small handles. It just doesn't make sense in my situation. I don't see the point in carrying a fixed blade that has the same (or greater) footprint as a medium-sized folder, but with a less filling grip that I can only get two or three fingers around.

Custom might be the route to go. I have some small fixed blades, from Scott Gossman and BHK. However, the handles are a good size for my baseball glove sized (almost) mitts. Check out small knife shows for makers smaller, cheaper works. Larry Nowicki makes a nice small pocketable fixed blade, he is a maker here.

I have to agree with Christian here.
I'd get a small fixed blade only if my job requested a cutting edge very often, and for light tasks. Then, I would prefer it, and anyway, I would probably get a small blade with a comfy (longer) handle.
On the pure aesthetical side, there are lots of nice small FB around though :)

That Moki is a good looking little knife and VG-10 is a nice steel.
I carry and use small fixed blade knives pretty frequently. I find that many times I'll reach for a small fixed blade before I dig around in my pocket for a slip joint. I guess it might equate to the traditionalists OHO.

There's a pretty long thread on pocket-able fixed blades but I'm having a hard time finding it.

JK Toby's knife.

I just picked up a Koster Scout (5.5" total, 2.5" blade) from KSF. It came with a great pocket sheath (Pocono). I have it in my truck for when I am out and want an extra knife in my pocket. Nice size knife, great package, fits in my pocket really nice, not too much bigger than a large GEC folder. Steven

If you're worried about looking dangerous, a belt knife, no matter how small and decorative, will always be scarier than a pocket knife. People will wonder why you need a knife, why you need to display it, and why you need it poised for instant deployment. I once got a funny look from a roofer in my own driveway for pulling quite a tiny knife off of my belt to cut something with.
If this FB is going in your pocket, of course it isn't an issue, but the knife you mentioned looks uncomfortably large for a pocket.

I would look at knives labeled "bird and trout". Several companies make them and some are beauties. I have also seen a couple of sheaths that clip inside a front pocket that make the knife less conspicuous. Hope you find a great knife.

...with a question for you. Are you comfortable using small (under 5,5") fixed blades? Just curious, cause I never carried one...

Thanks, Fausto! That's the one I was thinking of.

The smallest I have are 5 1/2". As long as the handle is 3" or more I can use them ok.
Here's one that is 5 3/4", the blade is 2 1/2" tip to guard. I can slip my pinkie inside the lanyard loop and it's very safe and usable.

Hello Andy. I was wondering the same thing. I really like slipjoints but I also wanted a small fixed blade that would fit in my front pocket. I ended up making one. It has been in my pocket everyday since along with the slipjoint of the day. Try it, I think you will like having one.

The right puukko just might be the ticket. Beautiful, but more importantly lightweight. Here's one my friend carries around on a regular basis.
