A gift for a Rancher (301 stockman vs case large stockman)

Hey fellows,

There is a new rancher friend of mine who I believe will need a good blade. I want to be the one to gift him a good solid, reliable blade. I am thinking a large stockman pattern (however I am open to suggestions). He is not a knife person but I am sure he will use it hard around the ranch. Anyone here with field experience than can tell me which one they would pick from the shelf if aestethics didn't matter much... Or should I just go straight up for a buck 110 or a similar case knife?

I would have posted this in the buck section but I really want you case carriers' opinion too.

THANKS !

I prefer Case just due to handle materials. If you want to get something in "plastic" and stainless I'd might get the Buck. Both are great patterns, just more handle materials in the Case. Case is a bit bigger though.

Pure heavy duty working knife - go with the Buck 301. If you want to add a little "pretty" to a heavy duty working knife go with the Case 6375. OH

I think the key thing here is that you stay he's not a knife person, and will use it hard.

This alone will put the Buck 301 in his pocket. It's tough, blade steel is a bit better, and he will not likely appreciate the cosmetics and nicer materials of the Case. The 301 is a workhorse first.

This. I don't see the Buck being any more heavy duty than the 6375, but the Buck is all business and nothing else.

With the Case you can get carbon steel flat ground blades. That would be my choice.

I think the buck 112 might also be a good option. It's pretty close to the 110 but in a little more pocket friendly package. I've carried a 110 for quite a long while, and I love the knife. Most people I've met don't think it lends itself to pocket carry very well though. I bought a 112 for one of my good friends a few months back, and he also is not a knife guy. He loves the knife though, and has carried it everyday since. Just another option to look at in your search. Hope you find what you're looking for

You could split the difference and go with a Buck 55!

Yes that is another option also. Oh who am I kidding anyway? There's too many options to just have one! Maybe get him a Case Large Stockman and a Buck 301. Oh and might as well throw the 55 and the 110 in there also, he's bound to be satisfied with one

My vote goes to a yellow handle Case XX Jumbo Stockman. Easy enough to find if he happens to lay it down while working and has carbon blades that will touch up easily.

This.
Plus the organization of the blades on the 301 helps with heavy work.

Where will he be ranching, and what are the knives commonly carried in that area? Don't tell anyone, but knife guys tend to be a somewhat trendy lot. :p If everyone in the area is into Case yella CV knives, that might be what he wants too. Ditto for trapper vs. stockman, single blade vs. multi blade, pocket carry vs. belt sheath, locking vs. slipjoint, knife vs. Leatherman, etc.

Also, what's your budget?

mudguard: Don't forget the GEC Farm & Field line. There are some great choices there if you think a Sodbuster pattern would work for your buddy. The new #21 Bullbuster is 4 5/8 inches closed, whereas the #71 Bullnose is 3 7/8" long closed. Both offer a lot of knife for the money.

All of them. If he's not a knife guy then the 301 with stainless. He'll have no worries us in it as a work knife

He is in Austin Texas.. I am in the Toronto area of Canada. Budget wise.. it is hard to tell but a case line or buck knife is within budget (lets say around 50 or 60 bucks on the higher end of the scale).

Case XX 3318PU CV medium stockman with punch is designed for ranching, carries well in the pocket and will last a lifetime and under budget.

Buck 301 would be the best choice for your friend. Hard use knife, stands up to abuse, looks good, and he won't have to worry about rust and oiling the blades. if you think the 301 is too big go 303.
