A gift for a Rancher (301 stockman vs case large stockman)

No thumb studs in Traditional.

Another vote for the 301
Have one in my belt pouch now

One tough knife
Feels tougher than my Case stockmans

He is in Austin Texas.. I am in the Toronto area of Canada. Budget wise.. it is hard to tell but a case line or buck knife is within budget (lets say around 50 or 60 bucks on the higher end of the scale).

My vote would be a yella CV Case trapper. Very Texas.

If he is not a knife guy and a rancher, does this mean he employs modern methods and usually doesn't need a knife... Being not a knife guy? If so why three blades vs a gec or case single blade sodbuster?

Another great option would be a U.S.-made Schrade 8OT Old Timer stockman. They're no longer made, but are pretty easy to find on that big auction site. Great carbon steel knives, built to take a licking.

In my neck of the woods this is a popular knife. Just depends on what they're going to do with it. For a general chore knife it might be really hard to beat a Farm and Field Tool (sodbuster). Especially with an easily sharpened blade. Shouldn't break the bank either.

They are both sturdy useful tools....I love them both ...case and Buck. The Case 6347 is comparable in size to the Buck 301. Honorable mention can also be placed on the Boker 7474 which like the Case, has round bolsters and carries a little more comfy for me. Cheers!
