My mother is asking me to get her a "good" kitchen knife / chef knife in the 8-10 inch blade length range, can anyone make any recommendations? I handed her a Moab as a joke , it was too heavy for her:)

Benchmade makes kitchen knives...

If she ever muddles it up, Benchmade will take care of it!

I am trying to see her expression having seen a MOAB handed to her.:D

I have a thin Nick in the butcher block. Everyone loves to use it:thumbup:

I'm wondering the same thing as Lexi, I would love to have seen the expression on her face as you hand her a MOAB.

Hahaha it was priceless, she made a face that looked like the scream mask.

If I asked for a kitchen knife and received a MOAB, I would be in hog heaven :D I wouldn't use it in the kitchen but I would on every SINGLE tree in my yard LOL

I use my 1311 in the kitchen all the time.... :D I buy whole beef back straps and slice them myself....does a great job....!!!

I guess it all depends on how much time she spends cooking, cutting, or in the kitchen in general. If she's a professional cook, you might want to look for a better / more expensive knife. If she typically does dinners and such, then maybe a mainstream maker that is price / performance relative. In the second situation, I've heard good things about Kershaw/KAI Shun knives, and they won't break the bank.

Good luck on the search.

Like stated above, Shun professional series...Santoku. A little under 2 bills but it is amazing in the kitchen. Love mine.

On a more serious note, IMHO you cannot beat the Victorinox Fibrox handle line for performance vs. value. The 8" will only run ~$35. The blade is thin and sharp, the handle is grippy and comfortable. One might quibble that the edgeholding could be better. In that case, buy her a Sharpmaker and teach her how to use it; or promise to keep her knives sharp for her.

I second the victorinox. My husband bought one for me for Christmas. Everything else stays in the drawer. Easily sharpened and holds edge reasonably well.
