A gift for my wife

I've gone back and looked at the handle 4 or 5 times now and I think it really is the best figured burl in any wood on any Buck I have seen..Did you color the wood in any way? I'm not familiar with what is used to stabilize wood and burl on knife handles but it looks sealed..

Gee, don't that make me big headed. I need to show this to my wife so she understands how cool her knife is.

No, no color added. The process of stabilizing removes color, if anything. I don't believe in plasticizing the wood. I just remove the air/water and replace it with my compound so the wood doesn't want to re absorb. WSSI probably does a better job but I enjoy doing things myself.

Again all, thanks for the replies and kind words. I'll have a pic of the tree Monday.

Pete

Hopefully you harvested more from that downed branch and held on to it...

That is some lovely grain pattern!

I got over to the old homestead and took a few pics. I wish I would have had something to compare size to but I have a tree caliper that will measure diameter up to 38" and it was far to small to measure this tree. At a guess, it's 45" in diameter. The wood came from the broken branch in the upper left of the picture.

Here is where I took the wood from.

And here is my next victim. You can see the curls and twists in the wood. The nice thing about post oak is it's so slow to rot.

what kind of oak...water/live oak hybrid?

edit part...sorry saw you said a post oak in your original post...ignore my dumb question.

Congratulations on such a special anniversary and it appears your Lovely Spouse is a keeper since she agreed to a knife for a present!

This one looks like it's sleeping. The closed eye in the middle. Can you see it? It's freaking me out man. Put it back.

:eek::eek: Now that you mention it, I see a deer's head. Hair on the skull above the eye, cheekbone below, nose ridge outline and a nose...anyone else see it?

more like a llama, mouth open, with a crest like a cardinal lol

I don't know if I've ever show this here but I was able to salvage enough of this wood to do a 501, for me of course;).

Here they are together and on their stand. Enjoy...pete

Soon they'll be off to the engraver. The wife wants initials and hearts. She's getting scrolls...

Ha ha 35 for me and the misses in june as well. Just this year not last. Beautiful knife! Also that looks like a horses head to me.
I wish i had half a clue how you masterful craftsmen do the work you do,it is truly a gift!

They are beautiful! One of my simple pleasures is watching cream mix into a cup of coffeee. There is a fleeting instant when they are swirling together that is just amazing to watch. Then it’s gone.

This wood seems to have captured that moment. Well done sir.
