A good all rounder

BOTH of which i cant seem to get in/to Australia.
I too am an Aussie.

be very, very careful about dealing with Australian Customs.

they have their own, rather bizarre, method of determining which blades can be imported without a permit and which ones need a permit.

sometimes, these decisions and definitions will change while your blade is en-route for no apparant reason.

for example, all Benchmade knives with the AXIS Lock mechanism are classified as Prohibited Imports.

i'd suggest trying to source a knife from a local dealer where possible. it may cost you a couple of bucks extra, but at least all the customs issues are sorted out for you.

check the Asian and Australian Knife Community forum for some ideas on suppliers.

if you shop around, buying from some Australian dealers only adds maybe $5 in every $100 compared to importing them yourself.

personally, i'll just cough up that extra $5 and let someone else deal with Customs for me.

The ZT does look pretty good but your right in thinking the handle puts me off a little. Also to clarify when i said i like fat blades i meant the width of the blade not the thickness of the metal.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing fat blade = blade width.

So you want something thicker than the ZT? I consider the blade to be pretty wide.

here's a good picture of it (link as its a massive pic)

EDIT: you could get custom handles, but that will be more money, and you might have to send it away.

What about a custom blade? Jk knives (stomper) has some bush blades that are under $150 with your choice of wood, and I believe they are o1 steel.

It really needs to be something i can source from Australia i think. (thanks anyway).

Yeah, i know. I have heard of the dodgy customs. I will try find a knife that i can get in Australia. Thanks for the link.

No, no we're on the same page. I like the blade.

You should be able to get most production folders from either Ron @ Urban Conquest, or try platatac, cuttingedgeknives (very expensive). Aussie dealers do exist, mind you you will be paying high prices, but thats better than getting your knife seized, IMO.

So do I, although it may be too "tactical" for the bush, but you could strip it, and remove the black coating. Satin finished/stripped ZT's look pretty good IMO.

I really like the look of some brownings. Whats the brands reputation like?

Sorry but I have no experience with any browning knives, so I can't comment on them. However I have heard of a few CRKT knives which are meant to be quite good quality, like the CRKT Drifter.

however I think you should get the best knife your 150 bucks can get you, and this is just my opinion, but I think you can get a better knife than a browning.

Hopefully someone with more experience can chime in.

Again with the lifeless black handle though. I love the look of the first and last browning i posted.

have you looked at any of the Falkniven folding knives, they make lockback and linerlocks, and also slipjoints however they are a bit smaller than the knives you posted, but I am pretty sure a few of them come in wood handles.

This has cocobolo handles however its only a 3" blade

I second the Buck 110. It was the first tactical folder way before that genre began. If Hells Angels carry it, it's gotta be good.

Im just not a fan of the skinny handles and upper curving blades. I think im just too picky. Oh well, enough for today. Im going to bed.

Tiiiim, fellow Aussie here. Mate, I have bought knives from OS such as ESEE Izula (great small fixed Blade) and even a Benchmade 585 barrage (axis lock) which customs opened and cleared with a note saying it was ok, as well as buck, sog (assisted opening).
Aussies pay much too much on australian ebay sites because they think they cant import the knife they want. Not true! Currently waiting on a HAK, hope I have not jinxed myself!
There are many sites with decent shipping costs to look at. Knivesshipfree, edcdepot, goinggear, outfittercountry(ebay). Also there is a QLD dealer called Cutting Edge Knives who is more expensive but stock just about everything and you won't have to worry about customs. Good Luck
Jeff

The best way (in my exp) dealing with customs agents when shipping from the US is to state the package as "Camping Tools back from repair" with a value of $70 USD. I have used this without fail when shipping to any USSR countries and Malaysia.

But if you were to try and import that same bechmade 585, there's a good chance that it would be seized.

However importing fixed blades in Aus are not a problem, as long as they aren't double edged, daggers, and some other restricted styles of knives.

Cutting edge knives does have a wide range, but I think that 425 bucks for a ZT 0301 is just too much.

yuh. some aussie dealers are just out and out crooks imho.

Ron @ UC seems to be reasonable on his pricing. small'ish orders (two or three knives at a time) seem worthwhile to get from him. it only works out at around 5% more than dealing with the US stores directly and eases all Customs issues.

but if i was doing a big order for a dozen or so blades, it would be cheaper to deal direct with one of the US online firms.

Yeah, im not out to get heaps of knives. Although there are some real pretty ones out there. I might have to start a collection. Probably go the same way as my novelty cigarette lighter collection i have over 45.
