After browsing the forum for a while I can see these are good knives in the 30$ range that are a good pocket carry in outdoor trips.

1. CRKT M16
2. Boker TRANCE
3. Smith Wesson SWAT serrated

Which one should I grab ? I guess the question is what is the least crappy knife here ? Perhaps you have your own recommendation ? i'm open.

Thanks !

I'd recommend the Ontario RAT 1 over any of those by a huge margin. To call it the "least crappy" option would do it a major disservice -- it's a very good folder in its own right.

More generally, one of the many great things about the knife world right now is that you can get a very good folder for $30 or less. A couple other possibilities that could suit your needs are the Spyderco Tenacious and Kershaw Nerve.

I recommend you stay away from Smith Wesson Anything.
you might be able to find a spyderco tenacious at the 30$ mark. though of your suggestions I would go with the crkt.

I think you could get a much higher band for the buck if you spent, say, 55 bucks on a kershaw junkyard dog II. form my experience, in this price range, it is basically indestructible. a spyderco tenacious or resilience will run you 35-40, and both of those would be excellent choices.
DUH: rat I. i hear nothing but good about it, and it is totally in your price range.

these can be found for about 10$ shipped

steel is comparable to what you would get in a Swiss army knife though.

Ontario RAT 1 and Ka-Bar Large Dozier Hunter are very good for their sub $30 price. The RAT 1 has solid liners and construction, while the Large Dozier Hunter has 4mm blade and strong back lock. For rough use I would pick either over Buck 110 any day.

+1 on the RAT. About the only negative thing I've heard about it is that the coating on the black blade version is just paint and doesn't hold up. Mine's not coated, and I'm amazed at how solid the RAT is for a knife that inexpensive.

I agree the RAT 1 and KaBar Dozier folders are excellent choices in that price range. I would also suggest you consider the Byrd line of folding knives as several models are under $30.

Ontario RAT, Byrd Cara Cara, and Ka Bar Dozier are probably your best options. If you can go a little higher, the Kershaw Skyline, Spyderco Tenacious, and Buck 110 are excellent.

Another one to consider is the Victorinox Sentinel.
I have a plain-edge, one-hander and think it's a great knife for the money. I think it'd make a fine general/light use outdoor knife.
I'm slightly surprised it's not more popular.

The RAT 1 Folder is one of the best <$30 knives available today in my opinion. I have lots of expensive knives that I carry but I actually still find the RAT 1 folder in my pocket quite often

Couldn't agree more. The Dozier edges out the Rat-1 on weight (4 oz. v 5 oz.) and is slightly thinner for carry comfort. YMMV ;)

Kershaw Blackhorse, Kershawguy has a few under $30 delivered NIB in the Exchange. I carried one of these for a looong time and ranks up there with the Buck 110. Spyderco Persistence or Kershaw Skyline are also good options.

Get an opinel, a sanrenmu, and a rough-rider. With careful shopping you should stay under $35.
