A good aoutdoors multipurpose folder up to 30$

Victorinox One Hand Trekker

Leatherman Blast Multi Tool

Scrade Trapper

Looks like its.going to be a RAT 1 guys ! Too many good reviews here.
Regarding the FSG M16 though. What exactly is so baf about it ? The design is very attractive i must say.
And it has auto lock feature for extra safety.

Didn't think your initial choices would go over well. :D I'd add another vote for the KaBar Dozier Folding Hunter. It's an outstanding knife for what you are wanting to spend.

I see you're now looking at the RAT 1 - another outstanding knife. My buddy just got one and couldn't be happier with it.

Victorinox One Handed Trekker!
Or a Rat-1 or a Tenacious.
I've heard some not so good things about the M16 though.
On the other hand i have a M21 and thats a good sharp and beefy folder (hate the auto-lawks though).

The Victorinox OHT, Buck 110 and several others that are mentioned by the guys above are great options.

I once bought three of those S&W knives for experimenting and although one of them, marketed as a SpecOps knife, wasn't really bad, I found the others were crap. For an outdoor folder in specific and knives in general, I recommend buying from brands with a good reputation and good and consistent quality.

many SAK models (especially the alox models, and the one hand opening models), opinels, douk douk, rat 1, buck 110...and many more
personally I would go with a SAK for the extra options like a saw, awl, screwdriver/pry...

CS Pocket Bushman. I just got mine a week or so back, and was very pleasantly surprised. It's very well made, and the steel seems reasonable for a utility folder.

Pocket Bushman reminds me of an XL Douk Douk I picked up in France (as a momento) some years back, and was one of the reasons I bought it.

All the flak about the ram lock? Like any mechanism, it wears in and gets smoother. I will say, however, it's not a knife for the careless (but then, very few are).

After browsing the forum for a while I can see these are good knives in the 30$ range that are a good pocket carry in outdoor trips.

1. CRKT M16
2. Boker TRANCE
3. Smith Wesson SWAT serrated

Which one should I grab ? I guess the question is what is the least crappy knife here ? Perhaps you have your own recommendation ? i'm open.

Thanks !

What forum have you been browsing?!?!? I can't believe this forum would have given you the impression that a Smith Wesson SWAT serrated would make for "...a good pocket carry in outdoor trips."

Listen to jacktrades and HikingMano....a Vic Farmer is among the ulitmate "...good pocket carry in outdoor trips."

Not at all tacticool....but do you need tacticool in the woods?

Also...something to consider...a folder with a blade, saw, awl/punch, scredrivers, bottle and can openers is WAY more a multipurpose folder than a single blade locking tactical folder.

Unless you need to stab trees, of course. Maybe deanimate a squirrel.

Really the Sanrenmu knives are better than the ones you listed. You can probably find one that is more like what you want than any of those 3 as well. Also, it is relatively easy to get them for less than $12 or so shipped.

If you want one good knife though, I'd recommend the Kershaw Zing. A blem Ener-G, Needs Work, or Ram from Kershawguy would be good too.

Edit: in another vein, the Victorinox Cadet or Farmer might be good for you in the woods, as well.

I'd say KaBar Dozier or Spyderco Tenacious or something from the Byrd line as well. Excellent quality for the $

Spyderco, Benchmade, Kabar, Kershaw all have good options in that general range. I'd probably expand my options and open it up to under 50 (the extra 20 could make a substantial amount of difference. Haven't used the RAT 1 myself, now I find myself wanting to look into that too.
