A good beater knife for a decent price

Just a suggestion, narrow down your criteria a bit, or you'll be forever trying to decide on a knife as most of those suggested are great knives and there have only been a few repeats, and you're only on the first page.

How about a Case sodbuster or sodbuster jr? Now thats a sturdy, workhorse of a knife right there for $25-30., or a Buck 110 or the smaller 112.

Kabar Doziers are great inexpensive beaters. Better yet go to Lowes and get yourself a Case Sodbuster for $19.99. They have been beaters for years.
You may find yourself falling into slippy love.

hmm hard to decide but i may go with the Spyderco persistence mainly because i don't own any spyderco knives and would like a cheap one before i decide to get a better one

with Kershaws finish they are very prone to rust

I have NEVER had a Kershaw develop even a speck rust. The BB finish they use may be more prone to rust than some others, but I wouldn't say they are "very prone to rust"

Back on topic, the byrd line has plenty to choose from as does Kershaw. The Boker Trance and the Hyper are good choices too

+1 on Spyderco Tenacious, Byrd Cara cara, or Ontario RAT 1. All three are cheap knives that feel like they could take a lot of abuse.

I have had multiple kershaws develop rust specks and it is a pretty common complaint around here. Would 'they are very prone to rust for a stainless steel' be ok? Just because you haven't experienced it in your climate doesn't mean it's not a problem.

Edit: Just saw you are in the middle of a desert. Does anything rust there?

That being said I have gotten the sandvik 14xxx steel VERY sharp. It will treetop hair with a little bit of work and holds the edge pretty good.

Ontario RAT-1

Just picked one up a few weeks ago. I am really impressed.

I have one of those on the way to me - only around US$27 for what looks like a pretty decent knife. On the youtube review by bluntruth4u . . .
Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRKqu-xBsdA and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn4zLpd_Cks he suggests that it is easily worth more than the $27 it costs.

It would be hard to imagine someone being afraid to use and abuse a $27 knife - no need to baby even a nice knife when it is that cheap to replace.

Kabar Mule

(For just a liiiiittle more) Spyderco Endura Gen. 4

I'm going to say spydie tenacious or persistence. But it also depends on size and use. The delica and the endura are fantastic as well. Alot of kershaws are really nice too but I too have found them to rust pretty quickly in the humidity of south Carolina and Baltimore. I also find that my boker trance rusted very quickly even though I keep my knives under oil when they are not in pocket.

wooohoo 100th post!!!

I don't see it so I'll say it; kershaw JYD II CB you'll have a hard time finding a better performing knife in its price range.

The Spyderco Persistence is nicely portable and you may find the bigger brother Tenacious a bit big, a bit too scary looking around non-knife-people. They are quite good but do feel rougher than the Japanese, Taiwanese and American Spydercos though, which is logical at the price.
The Byrd Cara Cara G10 is also rather ok if you want a bigger folder, consider it as the backlocking alternative to the Tenacious.
