A good knife for use in water

I am looking for suggestions on a good knife for use in, and around, water. I would like to find a knife I can keep on me (preferably IWB, but around my neck also an option) at the beach or while rafting and wet-wading while fishing. I would really like a folder, but my main concern is getting sand in the pivot. A short fixed-blade knife would probably also work. I have looked at Gerber's River Shorty and River Runner and was unimpressed. I'm also obviously concerned about corrosion too. From what I have gathered on these forums, it looks like a Spyderco Salt would be a great option, but I'm looking for other solutions as well. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

The salts are a great choice but I'll always reccomend my SOG Trident folder. For a fixed blade I'd look into the CRKT ABC knives or some other small-ish necker.

My vote is for one of the Salts. If you're looking for a folder to use in and around water of any sort, the Salt series is the best you'll find. They also make great EDC knives.

I would strongly suggest something from the Spyderco Salt series; as they are made with H1 steel, and will not rust.

I'm on/around the water all summer. The SALTS are the best!! If you can find a Gerber Blackie Collins Clip-lock, AWESOME fixed blade, it may be just a little to big for some to neck carry.

again, I'm gonna chime in with everyone else and say go with the salts. It won't rust and holds its edge a lot longer than I assumed it would when I first got mine. I liked mine so much I carry it every day.

Several I've used in and around fresh water are the two small fixed blades called River Knives by Gerber. These are great little knives with three way use of the neat little sheaths that they come with. They are quick deployment type and nicely done. I really like the screwdriver or pry blade they make better than the pointed one and prefer the black over the yellow but yellow is a good color if you drop it. I have never had any issues with rust of anything like that with these for Kayaking or river wading.

In folders the Spyderco Catcherman is a great water knife (fresh water) and I've used it for a lot more than just filleting fish, its also a good long kitchen duty knife in general. Spyderco discontinued this one but you still see them on ebay and around the for sale forums fairly often. I prefer the older AUS8 version over the much thinner MBS26 steel one they made later.

All the Spyderco Salt series of knives are wonderful water knives and will even hold up in salt water with no worries of rusting at all. The Pacific Salt is my favorite one.

On more expensive salt water knives. The David Boye folder for $135 plus or minus is a great little folder also non magnetic and completely rust free in nature.

Then of course the Mission titanium knives are also going to be great water use knives at a higher cost also.

There is also the Ocean Master Server Titanium folder. I have one. It seems pretty nice, light and sharp. Comes with a nice nylon/velcro close sheath.

Can't vouch for it in use, as I haven't used it yet, but others say it stays sharp a long time and being some sort of titanium, doesn't rust.

It reminds me of a Spyderco Endura, in construction, with FRN type handles and a lockback with partially serrated edge. However, the serrations are pretty understated, if you squint, you'll miss 'em.

I'm not saying it is as good as an Endura, just reminiscent of one.

It's about 57.00 delivered.

agreed - have used my pacific salt(s) extensively. Good free-diving and fishing knife.

Excellent responses and extremely helpful. Thank you very much folks. It looks like the Salt Series form Spyderco it is. Now just have to plan a trip to the beach to justify the knife!

Benchmade River Rescue can be worn around the neck or on a belt, any Mora sheaths can be converted into neck sheaths, they are cheap, and stay razor sharp. It will rust on you if you keep it in an airtight chamber, but it will stay sharp. My best bet would be a Salt folder.

By the end of the year, should see a Salt fixed blade !
