a good pack ?

You could do worse than getting a British Army Daysack. It's main compartment is 30l, it also has a compartment in the top flap and 2 good sized side pockets (they can take a 1.5L bottle of water easily).

The evil bay has them but if you google a bit i'm sure you'll find some.

I have one that a cut the side pockets off, I use it for when i'm out for 48hrs or so. Sleeping bag, waterproof jkt, warm top, 2L water and rations all goes in with a poncho and rollmat on the outside.

+1 on the Arcteryx Bora 80. I have had mine for 10 years and the only real signs of use are the sweat stains. I would love to replace it, but I just can't kill it. And I can't justify replacing it just because I want one of the new lightweight models, at least until I rectify my unemployed condition.

I've been looking at the Osprey Kestrel 38 myself for a daypack that can double as a minimal overnighter pack. Have to try one on and decide to pull the trigger or not by this sunday (REI member coupon expires)....

I've had a 2000 cu in / 32 liter Camelbak (Alpine Explorer) and I didn't think it had enough room for me for an overnighter, especially since I don't have a lot of tiny ultra-light gear. I ended up getting a Falcon-II (1500 cu in / 25L) and while I love the bombproof, organization, and modularity/expandibility, I'm starting to think that I might be happier with a more comfortable pack that carries weight better. At least for the normal type of hiking activities I do. I could expand the Falcon and make it work for an overnighter, but it's just not the most comfortable pack for long trips though. So I've been shopping around and have narrowed it down to an Osprey Kestrel 38 or Talon 33 (Atmos 35 would have been nice size, but I want a top loader this time). Right now leaning towards the Kestrel for the internal frame, little extra room with not much gain in weight, and slightly better fabric and a few other features. The only things I'm worried about is if 38 liters is too big for a daypack, and if having a zippered opening on the bottom of the pack is the best of ideas. http://www.ospreypacks.com/detail.php?productID=127&colorCode=698&tab=description

If you have an REI or some other outdoor store near, it's a good idea to just go in and see what fits you the best (be sure to walk around with some weight in the packs you try on, as hikeeba said).

I've come to learn that these observations are pretty spot on

Russell, I couldnt agree more man. The falcon is a SWEEEET pack, but just not up to my comfort standards. Osprey rules man, the Kestrel is badass.

I agree. When buying a pack, its always better to do in person. Everyones differant, and packs will fit everyone a bit differant.

Hope my feedback helped rksoon! Let us know if you get it and your impressions. I really like Osprey packs and the Kestral is well designed and built.

I totally agree. The Osprey Kestrel 38 made me sell my Kifaru and not look back. It's a well made pack that rides AWESOME! I have been looking for something that is as light as possible with a lot of features. I am a "Ultralighter" but have always used heavier packs because I like the way they fit better than the UL packs which for the most part are sacks with straps. So my pack was the only thing I used that was not UL. This pack, while not light, rides as well as my Kifaru, which until now I thought couldn't be beat. Because I do use lighter gear etc. I can squeeze 5 days out of the 38. I put my Tarp in the built in pack cover pocket and my sleeping pad strapped to the outside which leaves plenty of room for 5 days of food.

Definitely! I've been chatting with Rock6 since I knew he owns one, and he's been an awesome source of info :) Thanks again Rock, going to try one out at the store tomorrow.

Jake and Hutch - Awesome! Good to hear more people chiming in on the Kestrel 38 :) I'm pretty stoked to check it out tomorrow, will post a thread with initial impressions if I get it. Won't be able to really get out with it though, until after June, but I'll report on its use soon after :) And Hutch, awesome to know you can rock 5 days in it! I need to work my way up to lighter gear.

PimpNugget, sorry to hijack sorta, hope I helped a little. Goodluck!

Hey rksoon, here's a picture of my Kestral 38 with the Maxpedition Devildog piggybacked...just a little simple rigging and no major modifications. Once we made the base camp, I used the Devildog for the more serious bouldering and scrambling:

The tent was placed just on top of the Devildog and held by the main cinch straps. I much prefer the hammock as I don't like the wide feel of the tent.

Right on Pimpnugget

ROCK - Thanks for the pics! I tried it on at REI yesterday and ended up ordering one (wanted the blue one). It's a great pack, and wasn't too big as I feared it might be  I'll post a review when I get out to use it
