a good sak for outdoor use?

If you don't need a locking main blade, the V'nox Fieldmaster offers an optimum selection of tools in a very compact package: besides the big and small blades, it has the great SAK woodsaw, awl with eye for threading!, scissors, plus the usual drivers, openers, toothpick.

I carry my Fieldmaster while hiking, backpacking, and traveling. I gave one away some years ago to a backpacking companion I met on the trail, then promptly got a new one when I returned home. Extremely useful and easy to replace, if necessary.

Trailmaster for a larger knife. I actually prefer the red handles of the Rucksack, but have an unnatural hatred for the models with corkscrews.
I really like the Outrider's tool assortment, but it is too thick for me.
All of those are missing the small spearpoint blade, which is the one I actually use the most. I have a Hiker on the way, that will give me back my little blade, and still have tweezers, and a saw. I think I'll like it.

You'll love it. I have the Camper which is the exact same knife, but with the corkscrew instead of the phillips. ;)

It seems to be the smallest SAK with all the options that I need. (3 Layers) I prefer the Corkscrew over the phillips becuase I find more use for the corkscrew in the bush then a phillips head.

I like having use of the saw on mine, which is basically a huntsman minus the hook, tweezers and pick. So, if it were me getting another one, it would be the huntsman. A nice compliment of tools for the outdoors.

For pocket carry, I like the Hiker.

For Hunting, I like the lock blade Hunter
(carried in a belt pouch).

That's a rebranded one-handed trekker/trailmaster (very similar to the one a bunch of posters (myself included) discuss above). Although, it seems from that pic (and the accompanying write-up) it is missing the toothpick and tweezers. The toothpick I wouldn't miss, but the tweezers I might. Guess that's the price you pay for ditching the red V'nox cross and getting the cool german eagle on there instead.

IMO you should select new SAK knife based on what knife-knives you will be carrying with it. I always bring SwissChamp with myself. And I will say it has too many tools that I used it regularly. But in combination with Spyderco Delica and Tramontina, or Busse it makes a good choice because then you almost forgot not a single tool at home what is important and the fact it is not very comfortable is not an issue because you use tools only. I used every tool on it now, that is the fact. However, I probably could manage even without it, but the question if I really liked the experience.
IMO if you intend to use it as a knife, then it would be better with less tools otherwise it will be annoying to clean it. But as a tool- the more tools the better.

what do u guys think of the hercules i was looking at one the other day for a lock blade its got alot of tools a little big for pocket carry

When I camp I generally take my Victorinox Locksmith model. I don't know why they give it that name. It has a large locking knife blade, a large saw, a large metal file, a locking screwdriver/cap-lifter, a canopener/small-screwdriver, an awl, a phillips-head, toothpick and tweezers. All this is only 4 spring channels thick.
