Two Art Kotanto (traditionally crafted small tanto) made from reclaimed materials...

recently completed a large piece and want to make room in the display case for it...


1. ToraSaya Kotanto

The first is a collaboration with a local woodworker, he did all the wood by hand, i did all the metal by hand...blade charcoal forged from antique farm equipment high carbon steel, copper habaki and seppa, wrought iron tsuba from a link of dock chain, tigerwood shirasaya with african blackwood accents...

Comes with a handmade linen storage bag w/silk cord, a yellow cedar storage box with bamboo nails, a tigerwood and african blackwood display stand that fits in the box, and a 40 page hardcover color book documenting its creation (ToraSaya Project Portfolio)

The blade is about 4″ long and the overall length closed is just under 9.5″.

2. IchoHime Kotanto

The second is a collaboration with a local silversmith, she did the fuchi and i built the mounting around it, copper habaki, rayskin wrap, ebony kashira, purpleheart saya...comes with handmade silk storage bag and a 40 page hardcover color book documenting its creation

The blade is 4.5″ long, an overall length of about 9″, and the overall length when closed is just under 10.5″.

These are officially the most amazing knives I've seen posted here; of course I'm a die hard fan of the Japanese style blades but that does not negate the fact that these are to the level of these just being that good. I'm now depressed that I can only see the pictures instead of hold one of these in my hands

Honestly I felt exactly the same the first time I saw Dave's work, especially the last sentence.

Send him a message, he makes dressed down user pieces that are a lot more affordable but still have every bit of soul that he puts into his art pieces. I reached out to him figuring what's the worst that could happen and now I'm on his books for a project.
 
This is like, "Nothing to see here folks. Just keep moving," except the polar opposite, in cutlery. So much to see here.
