I wouild like to start by nominating:

Pachelbel's Canon in D This music played at the right time and place can move hardened men to tears. In my mind the most beautiful music ever written.

What music speaks to you?

For me, Debussy's Clair de Lune and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata do the trick when I'm in the mood. Besides that, the score to Amelie has some great songs. There was a point in time that I was listening to Hajime Mizoguchi at least once a day.

As for vocal tracks, I'm still hooked on Rufus Wainwright's The Maker Makes, from the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, as well as Bewitched, from The History Boys. If I want something depressing, acid jazz and trip-hop usually do the trick. Portishead's Glory Box was a favorite of mine for a while, as well as Beck's Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention Gary Jules' version of Mad World.

The Darguson (my band just played Holst's variation on this)

The opening bassoon cadenza from Rite of Spring just makes me feel so alive, I don't know why. (The first time I heard it I thought it was an english horn)

Just about any heroic movie music in 6/8 or 12/8 with a french horn crying a high, golden melody.

Marvin Gaye- "Let's get it on" or "Sexual Healing" are both moving pieces.

My favorite piece of music is Weather Reports "Birdland" by the late Joe Zawinul.

Favorite Classical . "Tocatta and Fugue in D minor" by another great Joe , especially on a pipe organ.

Manhatten transfer does a neat version of birdland. Check it out!

You are missing out. Try Gaye's T Plays it Cool, Whats Goin' On, Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues, Flyin' High. Look for the Detroit Mix with the remastered stuff.

I had somewhat of an "urban" upbringing. MoTown, '60's and '70's R&B, Smokey Robinson, Temptations, Four Tops, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and 70's stuff like Parliament, Cool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire. The stuff stirs the soul.

I have a good list and you guys have added to it, but two of my favorites is Beetoven's 6 (Pastorale) and Dave Grusin - Mountain Dance.

Elsa's Procession To The Cathedral- I was in a really good high school band and when we played it right everybody had tears- try getting tears out of high school age guys!

Mussorgsky's Khvanshchina: Prelude
Dawn on the Moscow River

My 3000th post!

Some of mine:

Who isn't moved by Amazing Grace on bagpipes? -

The Greek-inspired theme from "Serpico." Reminds me of the movie and of the phenomenal man which inspired it -

This indescribably beautiful and haunting theme from "The Kingdom" -

For the "classics" of opera, when Paul Potts "manifested" Nessun Dorma I was practically

I also like Pavarotti's Il Gladiatore -

And finally this might be a bit hard to imagine to those not familiar. It's from one of those old Chinese Kung Fu shows on TV from the 80's called "The Smiling Proud Wanderer".

What makes it wonderful is the background story: two masters of both martial arts and music (who are also the best of friends) retire and abandon their worldly cares to simply concentrate on the music they love. They finally finish their opus after many years called Laugh at the World. The subtitles provide the translation which is a bit poetic and philosophical.

Amazing Grace on the bag pipes as previously posted steps on my heart, and puts a swell in glottis, to where it is hard to swallow. I think it is the scotch irish in me.

This is the song that "does it" for me. This guy (the lead singer of the Guess Who) really has a great voice.
