A guy that you won't see on BladeForums

I walked into a coffee shop late last night. The guy ahead of me has a black nylon or cordura sheath on his belt with BUCK written on it in white letters, so I yak him up. I ask him what model Buck he has. His answer was...."Buck". I know, I told him, but what model is it? His answer again was...."uh Buck, I don't know it's a Buck". It's a Buck Alpha folder and I dought that this guy will ever be here researching his knife choices. I saw this exchange as analogous to some motorcycle riders. Most of us are into bikes for the sport/excitement/freedom/mechanical aspects etc. In other words a multifaceted experience. Whereas the posers are just in it for the image. I suppose the bike posers and mall ninjas have the same rights of existance as the rest of us, I just chose not to exist around them as they disinterest me. You sure as hell can't talk to them about your sport/interests as they have little knowledge and really don't care. I'm sure glad that BladeForums is around when I meet the "I don't know, it's a Buck" dudes.

Sorry you had to run into someone like that. He should've been kicked in the balls. Maybe that would help spark the conversation.:D

Or he could've just been some guy that uses a knife for work but isn't a knife guy. Doesn't sound like a mall ninja to me.

I love guns and know every tiny detail about the ones I own. But I know guys who own guns only to hunt and outside their personal rifle they couldn't tell you the difference between a .40S&W and a .357sig.

I concur with Mrmojorising.

We come here to share stories , knowledge and experience related to knives , because we view knives as not just a part of our lives but a cherished hobby , for want of a better word.

Just because someone who carries and uses a knife does not know everything possible about the knife does not mean much at all really , perhaps his experience is in other areas.
Maybe he is into computers , or firearms , or militaria and history. Maybe he was just a farm dude out to buy a pack of smokes after a hard days work.

There are some people who don't want to talk to strangers, or they just had enough of a long day or lousy shift on the job.

I've known quite a few people who refer to a "Buck knife" as simply a generic good heavy locking folder. They aren't mall ninjas at all. They just want decent, functional tools.

Bufford may have a good point, too. The guy could easily have been thinking, "Who the hell is this mall ninja, and why does he think I want to bullshit about knives with him?"

At least he has a knife.

Just like bikes--doesn't matter if its a Harley--1000cc Super Sport--or a Scooter---at least they're ridin.

Yeah, there are mnay different kind of knife guys, that guy just seems to liek to carry a knife, whether he uses it or not, well who knows...not everyone who carry's a knife are like us...lol, we are the true knife nuts., we spend alot of free time talking about them...Im sure if that guy didn't know what kind of knife he had he wouldn't be interested in talking about it much, let alone with strangers...I sometimes meet people like that, I will see someone with a knife clipped to their pocket and ask, hey whatcha got there...Most of the time they pull out a flea market special...only once in my life I did that and the guy pulled out a Microtech LCC with customized ivory handle scales...I was shocked, turns out he was a member of microholics.org...we had a nice LONG chat together! To bad I met him on vacation...otherwise if he lived close by me Im sure I would spend alot of time with him talking up a storm, lol...

Something similar happened to me. I was in this coffee shop minding my own business and some Canadian comes up to me and starts asking about my knife. Well, I figure that if the guy is going to chat me up when I'm trying to have my coffee, he can pay for the coffee so I ask him for a dollar by saying "Buck". The cheap SOB doesn't come across with any cash but asks me more questions about about my knife. "Buck", I insist, "Buck" - but he doesn't seem to get the message. Finally he goes away. Some people! Go figure!

I run into people like that every now and then, typically carrying a knife they no nothing about with little or no desire to learn more about it.
I look at it this way, at least the guy has an EDC, sees the value of using a knife, and is not afraid of yours. All the power to them, I know how they will vote when the "ban all knives" petition comes around and that's good enough for me.

Hell, I carried a buck 110 everyday for years, and had no idea it was a 110.

I'd have said the same thing he did.
"it's a Buck knife"

WTF? Why come down on the guy so hard because he is not a knife enthusiast? How does carrying a Buck and not being a knife snob(affectionate) make someone a poser?

Exactly, almost everyone drives a car but try asking them what the 710, on top of the Engine, stands for and all you get are rude looks.

That's a good one Nordic!

Yeah, now that I think of it, before the internet, I only knew of the 5 spydercos from my local store. If you don't stroll around here, you'll never know what anything are call.

Interesting thread. I think we all have to be careful to avoid judging others based on their reaction (or lack of reaction), knowledge (or apparent lack of knowledge), etc. about our hobbies (knives, guns, wine, cigars, history, etc.). We don't want to come across as snobby, or elitist, etc.

i saw this guy once with a SAK on his keychain. i asked what model it was. he had know idea! he just said 'swiss army.' then i asked if it was a wegner or a victorinox, and he just had this stupid look on his face. i just laughed, pointing at him with my sebenza. what an ignorant dumbass!!!
