A guy that you won't see on BladeForums

Interesting thread. I think we all have to be careful to avoid judging others based on their reaction (or lack of reaction), knowledge (or apparent lack of knowledge), etc. about our hobbies (knives, guns, wine, cigars, history, etc.). We don't want to come across as snobby, or elitist, etc.

This is a good point and yes, I guess I was being snobby. I was looking at the scene through my enthusiasts glasses, not the average Joe's world view. I do see the dichotomies though and I can't deny them. I would still rather discuss knife models/steels/uses with other enthusiasts, than with Mr......"Uh, it's a Buck". Or ride with bike enthusiasts as opposed to the dentist that bought his first Harley at 45 in a mid life crisis, dresses in head to toe black leather, guns the bike at stop lights to impress the 14 year old girls and rides all of 10 miles every weekend. If others want to hang with these dudes, by all means go for it, but they are cliché's and bore me to death.

Well he wasn't trying to discuss knives with you. I don't even see where you make the comparison to any bike owner, owning/using a knife in no way suggests being an enthusiast or a poser.

People should not be so quick to judge. I have known a few people like the described in the original post that are now really into knives. You never know if one day that person will be a member here.

I realize I wasn't there and don't know all the particulars, but what makes you equate this man's carrying a blade and not being able to discuss its fine points with young men riding harleys? (Wish I were 45 again.)

To lots of folks a knife is just a tool. And thank God for that. A person can carry a knife and use a knife and not be into knives. Doing so does not automaticly make him a poser. I know a lot of folks that carry a blade that just want something to cut things with.

Are there other details of the encounter that confirms your assumption that he is a poser?

Do you know what model shoes you are wearing, or would you just say the brand name if someone asked?

I hope someday the anti-knife hysteria dies down, and a lot of non-knuts would carry knives because they are useful and for no other reason. Just like we do with shoes.

this thread makes me laugh...

I know my dad would not be able to tell you anything about the knives he carries, except maybe his leatherman tool.

I get my dad a knife every now and then. He knows if it's a good knife or a bad knife, sometimes he'll remember the brand, but that's about it.

It doesn't frustrate me at all when I meet people like that, they just aren't "into" knives. That doesn't mean they don't need or use one.

yes, kick him in the balls...

call out the National Guard!

Oh, and damn the torpedoes...

My dad carried a delica for closer to 10 years, he has no idea with model it is, what the steel is, and which gen. Ekkk, it's a COMBO EDGE. What a noob!

Seriously tho, I can see your point in being a poser with a bike, but knifes are much more common tool. Would you call your grandma a poser cuz she doesn't know the make and steel of her kitchen knife?

Most of the people in my neck of the woods who carry knives don't seem to know or care much about brands or steels. We forumites are a specific audience with an interest in knives. Remember that Buck and Case were "it" for many many years. Those are what make "good" knives to many people. Brand loyalty is long lived and people are not always curious about new or different.

There is no image, scores of people purchase knives and have no idea who made them or what model number they are. Some folk just use knives as utilitarian tools and don't think twice about blade geometry or steel. To them, little else matters.

Coffee shop .. late at night ......stranger with a knife ... he probably thought you were an real oddball ....
or possibly he probably thought you were GAY and tryin' to pick him up ....
ya' never can tell ......
Remember what your parents told you " Don't talk to strangers"...

I see absolutely nothing wrong with him not knowing what model it is...

if I asked you what chipset you were running on the mobo of your pc , would you know ? or if I asked what speed/type of ram you are running ? what rpm your HD is ? or if he walked up to you at your car and said.. nice tires , what's the tread wear rating ?

people sometimes just buy something cause they need something to do the job at hand. Coming down on him cause he didn't know the model , might make him think , " dam knife snobs "... and for all you know , he could have a safe full of Loveless at home :)

there is a way to educate without being rude or intrusive.

just for info , what were you carrying ?

Lots of good points being made here.
Many accomplished outdoorsmen don't know or particularly care about the make or steel of the knife they carry as long as it gets the job done.

I know I enjoy my motorcycle and 4WD vehicle a lot more when I don't worry about cleaning 'em to keep up appearances. Use 'em hard and put 'em away wet. As long as they get the job done (reliably) I'm happy. Clean? What's that?

I live in a small rural town, there are a lot more here using knives than those who are knife aficionados. I see a lot of old Case, Shrade/Uncle Henry, and Bucks with years of hard farm use on them.

Well, see? Whadda THEY know about knives? If a feller can't tick off the make, model, RC #, and the preceding variations, just what use IS it to have a knife?

Cutting things? That's silly.

;)
