Yeterdays experiment...

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=750505

.... left me thinking, I would have had other options had I been carrying the HEST rather than the 3MIL. With the HEST I could have stuck the knife tip in the limb and then baton-ed the knife into the limb striking the pommel, and then using the thicker blade pried off larger pieces of the fatwood for fuel. So I was looking earlier and the holes in boot/belt clip of the 3MIL don't like much lining up with the sheath of the HEST. Have you guys thought about making a clip like that available for the HEST? In a lot of cases I take the 3MIL places I would prefer to take the HEST given the same carry options...but I can not move the HEST from my belt to my boot or pocket near as quickly or discretely so the 3MIL wins out.

You are most certainly correct about the HEST's beefy tip. I think as far as tip performance it's the best knife I own.

I think mike had posted directions for wiggling the boot clip to the hest.

Thank you very much for that!

I had just looked at them and so how the lower two holes didn't line up, never thought about trying to force it. I ended up using the tip of the knife to relieve the holes a bit, but not by much and doesn't seem to have any negative effects at all. I'll try it out tonight, pics later :)

The DPx H•E•S•T has a few things to consider. The blade is much thicker, you aren't going to break it, no matter what kind of wood you are splitting, the tip is much thicker and you have the luxury using the prybar to create piles of curled shavings.

The hollow handle holds a standard fire starter (or spare) and if you look closely at the handle area you will notice that it is recessed from the frame so you can hammer it anywhere (including the end) without destroying the micarta. Small touches that come in handy under extreme abuse or in the DPx H•E•S•T's case, normal use :)

This is a great design. The postman just handed me my box from PatriotKnives today. Inside was my HEST.

I do not need this knife - I have an ESEE5 and Izula already (plus Mora, Leatherman, boot knife., etc., etc.)

But I had to have this knife.

I carry my izzy in my front pocket all the time - HEST just won't quite make it that way - the end sticks out a bit. I'll need to chew on this for a while, because this design is just great. I hate to keep it in my maxpedition pack all the time, I feel like I won't use it very much that way.

I'll think of something. I also need to figure out what to store in the handle.

If you can find any of the old MALICE clips that used to be on the market (polymer, folds over on itself and slips into a clip-thingy on the end, has screw holes on one side), a couple of those screwed to the sheath make THE PERFECT carry system, IMO. Easily conceals the HEST under any shirt, assuming you don't tuck the shirt in. Using that method, I have carried my HEST pretty much everywhere, including the office (on Hawaiian-shirt Fridays), and no one has known the difference. The MALICE clips are very similar to the MOLLE locks supplied with the HEST, but have more space between the front and back. The bad thing about the current crop of Blade-tech MOLLE locks are that they really don't have ANY space between the legs. So they are very difficult to attach to anything other the PALS webbing type straps. A Maxpedition Liger belt is very difficult to clip to. And I tried them to attach a pouch to an ESEE-4, and it was a non-starter because I couldn't get the MOLLE locks closed over the belt strap on the back of the pouch. But those MALICE clips, if you can find them, work perfectly over a belt, through a pouch-belt strap, whatever. I highly recommend the MALICE clips, if you can find them. The next ESEE I get, though, I'm going to try with Pull-the-Dot snap/straps from Blade-tech. I think I might be able to make them work similarly to the MALICE clips.

I don't know about the old style MALICE clips, but I quick search found that Tactical Tailor makes MALICE clips that match your description except without the screw holes. Since they are plastic, drilling your own holes should be simple. (I found them available in two sizes from ESEE authorized dealer EM Gear.)

Yep, so I had noticed :)

I learned from reading a thread here that I could do this, which works really well.

Lisa took me out for dinner at chili's and coffee up at Rembrandt's in the art district for father's day. I like carrying the HEST this way, it's very comfortable and I had no issues at all with snagging carrying it in a reverse draw on my right side. It's definitely sharper than the knives at Chili's :D .

Well...I don't expect to...but that is really good to know :)

"I also need to figure out what to store in the handle."

Ten tightly rolled up 100 dollar bills?
A spare knife?
The phone number for the A-Team?

I see what you mean... the choices are endless...

2 tightly rolled up 100s, 3 20s, 2 10s, and 3 5s might be better in a rough situation...just sayin' :)

If you hang out with the crazy chicks I do then put a condom in there and use the knife to cut your damn arm off the next morning to keep from waking her up!

My god I hope those days are over. Spending the last seven years of a fourteen year marriage with a woman I hated to see wake up was more than enough for me.

I like that clip-draw set-up. I might have to do that with mine.

The tension is a little tighter no, but with the pry-bar pommel grip is no problem. I like drawing it in a reverse grive and having it inside the belt keeps it nice and stable.
