A H.E.S.T. Question

The tension is a little tighter no, but with the pry-bar pommel grip is no problem. I like drawing it in a reverse grive and having it inside the belt keeps it nice and stable.

I could not get my RC-3 boot clip to work with mine. I COULD have hogged out the sheath holes, but I wasn't convinced that the clip carry would actually be better than the MALICE clips. So I aborted and went back to the MALICE clips.

I guess I'm just posting to say, don't be ordering something with the boot clip expecting it to automatically work with the HEST. I've forced some things without "hogging," and some things just require hogging. I'm not sure what the tolerances are on the boot clip vs. the HEST sheath, but it would have taken what I consider to be a non-trivial amount of hogging of the sheath to make my clip work with the HEST sheath. And mind you, I actually have been known to make kydex sheaths for a few of my knives, but wasn't willing to hog out the holes on my HEST sheath the amount necessary. Not that I really think that it would have destroyed the integrity of the HEST sheath. I'm just saying that in some instances, it is a little too much to force a la linked thread (which is the way I tried to do it).

I'll stick with my MALICE clips. They work MARVELOUSLY, assuming you're wearing some kind of belt.

Buy the RC-3 for its own strengths. ;)

I think, given the popularity of the H.E.S.T. and the way it lends itself to EDC, that a proper boot clip should be made available for it. The MALICE clips are not very useful to me, at least at the moment.

I usually carry my RC-3 in my front pocket using the boot clip. I would like to carry the H.E.S.T. this way, as well, especially the new design, when it becomes available.

If I was in that situation and the current clip/HEST sheath required tweaking, I would. The hogging wouldn't have been THAT bad. Just that for my use, the clip is unnecessary, not a big improvement over the MALICE clips, so I didn't want to start altering things just to make it work on a whim. But, I do agree with you on your assessment above, otherwise.

FYI - I had a belt clip that came with my ESEE5 - that knife is "scout carry" but I didn't care for the same carry for the HEST.

I simply drilled another hole (arrow) in the HEST sheath lined up with the belt clip (the factory holes line up on 1 side but JUST a hair off on the other and didn't want to wallow out the holes to fit) and used an old Chicago screw and washer from my box of spares. It holds very tight and the knife rides lower (so the pry bar doesn't stick me in the side).

The ESEE5 clip is a hoss! I clipped on onto just my front pants pocket and had to force the clip open to remove it - it'll hold nice and tight on a belt, too, of course.

Nice.... very nice.

That is one thing I hadn't thought of on the boot-clip with my HEST. Problem is, none of the boot-clip holes are offset enough to really do additional holes. But I might have to look at it again. Or, check to see how it may line up with my Izula.... the Izula would make an interesting boot knife.... but I guess that is another thread.

And for those who would like to try this and don't (yet) have an ESEE-5 or 6, the "Clip Plate for ESEE-5 Kydex sheath" is also available separately.
