A hole in Spyderco's lineup (no pun intended)?

I've been a benchmade customer for a long time, until recently. I've come to appreciate Spyderco's designs/quality, and the fact that they don't pump out mall ninja knives any chance they get. My problem is that I'll soon be in the market for a new fixed blade and don't see anything in Spyderco's product line that is really suitable. I need a fixed blade, 5+ inch blade (preferably 6), with a fairly slim profile (think traditional hunting knife slim) and a decent belly. The closest thing I can find is the Aqua Salt, and I'd be happy if the blade had more belly. Dressing game with the Aqua Salt seems like it would be less than ideal. The bushcrafter would be my second choice but it falls short (literally) in blade length. Sure there are plenty of knives that fit the bill from other manufacturers, but I wanted do business with Spyderco. My criteria don't seem too outlandish to me, why the lack of a hunting lineup?

You can get the Hossoms for a reduced price from Knifecenter.

Not sure if they fit your requirements, but they do have more "belly" than the Aqua Salt.

The Hossoms have a blade that is far too wide for my uses (I'm not nitpicking here, I promise), as well as being almost entirely recurved, making sharpening in the field a no-go for me.

Well, it's not a part of regular production but how about a Mule? It's not as long as something you're looking for, but it should make a decent camping/bushcraft knife.

Well, the 5" blade minimum is bare minimum for me. However, maybe there is another discontinued model that fits my needs that I'm not aware of?

how about the temperance 2? it has a 4 7/8 inch blade. it has micarta handles and it could easily be used to dress game. as a matter of fact somebody a little while ago posted a thread showing them dressing a deer with a temperance 2.

The temperance 2 could work but it's not ideal. For ~$200 I could get a custom that is exactly what I need from one of the makers over in Shop Talk. I know everyone is thinking "Why doesn't he just do it then and quit shooting down all of our suggestions". I'm just kind of surprised that Spyderco doesn't seem to have a purpose-built large hunting knife. Does anyone know if they have anything in the works?

From the looks of it might have to look elsewhere to fit your needs mate. Spyderco is a top notch company, but from the sounds of it they dont have what your looking for. Maybe try for a custom from one of the makers here? Plenty of great blokes to deal with.

Hi Onebagnomad,

The only thing that we make that's even close would be the Tempeance 2.

Maybe that custom is the answer. We support custom makers and recognize their skills at serving particular needs.

We do appreciate your thinking of us.

As Sal has said in the past, the fixed-blade market is tough to break into. He's been trying for years. People always seem to have specific criteria for what they want, and often a custom is the only practical way to meet those criteria. For every person who finds your specific criteria perfect for them, there are thousands that would say they'd buy it if it didn't have some feature you consider essential. Different strokes for different folks.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input. Sal, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'll be throwing some business Spyderco's way on some upcoming folder purchases. Might even pick up that aqua salt as a stop-gap.

The only production fixed blades I have are some Moras, all of my fixed blades are customs. Affordable users, but customs nonetheless.

I am going to bite the bullet and get an Aqua Salt however. Looks like a must have for on the boat.

What about the rock salt? Theres your belly :D

I'd like to second this, the Rock Salt may be your ticket. Over 6 inches, not a recurve, plenty of belly. Won't rust either. It can be had at a pretty good price right now as well.

A custom, semi-custom or mid-tech will fit you if the above won't.

How about the Warrior? http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=444

Yes, it's a purpose build fighter, but that doesn't mean it can't do anything else.
The blade is a little over five and a half inches, curved all the way, and it's made of H-1.
The guard might be an annoyance though.

Really the Temperance 2 or Rock Salt are your best bet, but the Warrior just might do the trick.
And it's one sweet piece of metal.

The Dayhiker is a great skinning knife and works well with large game in my experience (moose). It has a convex edge, but easily sharpens using a small hone, strop or Sharpmaker rod while in the field.

It is also dirt cheap at the moment:D

Really? it looks like one to me. Not as severe as the Hossoms, but it looks like it curves inward next to the ricasso before beginning to curve out at the belly.
