Well I just finished fitting my ASH into a Spec Ops Large Survival Sheath. It took me 2 times but I got it perfect. Boiling it does not work. It does not get hot enough. Heres how.
Im assuming this would work for any of the Spec Ops Sheaths too.
1. Preheat oven to 375-400 degrees
2. Put 3 layers of duck tape on the edge and spine of the blade. This makes it so the liner does not get cut and also makes it a tad bit bigger once its all done.
3. Coat the duck tape with a small amount of lube. I used olive oil. Dish soap would work too.
4. Make a small cut about 3/8" on the top of the liner ridge. This is where the choil will be. The liner will shrink (during cooling) in the area where the choil is and wont allow you to take the blade out if you dont do this.
5. Place plastic liner in oven for about 5-7 minutes. You can check it to see how soft it is. You want it to be soft to the touch and too hot to handle. (Be careful. Dont leave it in too long. If you are worried 300 degrees would probably be fine.)
6. Put on oven mitt.
7. Grab your knife with one hand and the liner with your mitted hand and put the blade in while you wrap your hand around the liner and push it on. Push it all the way up to the handles.
8. Let it cool together. I placed it in the freezer to speed things up.
9. Pull apart.
10. Take off duck tape, replace liner and screw and sheath that bad boy.
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps those who were having issues.
CGASH in Small Spec Ops Sheath
Dbessey has come up with a way to secure the liner in a small Spec Ops sheath. Below is the info from his post.
Small sheath can work too
The ASH's 6-1/2" blade falls into a no-man's-land in Spec-Ops sheath sizing. The large one that Norcalblacktail used is great but there's a bit of extra sheath length. The small sheath is advertised as taking up to a 5-1/2" blade. So I thought I'd see if you could get the ASH into a small sheath anyway - and it works!
I used Norcal's method with duct tape and soap (don't forget the soap!) and got the liner to fit the blade. You can see the tip goes right through where the retaining screw was, so I used some clear PVC cement to glue the liner in place. Just a band of glue around the top - doesn't take too much and if you overdo it you might dissolve the whole thing!! Then slip the liner back in place and wait a few minutes for the cement to set. And there ya go!
