A Japanese Survival Knife

To understand his reviews

He is a hunter and hunts deer
And only takes the backstraps and some back leg meat and leaves the rest to nature!
He does not gut, skin or butcher
No fire starting or wood skills

So he does great reviews on the usage for these very specific requirements of all his knives

Leaves the rest to nature? Not only do I find that totally immoral, it would be against the law in this state. Anyone know if that is a common practice in Japan?

He hunts up in the Mountains of his Island. Basically he takes as much as he can. It's no different from any other kind of mountain hunting, even in the United States.

so, you're saying people in the states who hunt in the mountains are poachers?

Real japanese survival knife is this one design by Tsuge - the Japanese MERC from French military

I know it's shorter, but this term is still considered derogatory....

Seriously ? A true hunter takes only what he can eat, and doesn't just pick the prime cuts. I know there are probably some that do, but it is wasteful, and it is a crime.

I think the term is pretty harmless, but the over-sensitive PC witch hunt is not. Cure yourself from this terminal disease instead of trying to infect us with it.

Both the knife in the video and the one posted by Erlkonig are blade heavy and have partial tangs held by ordinary wood handles. Typical for Japanese outdoor knives, but not a very sturdy setup.

About this reviewer, Wako is his name. He lives in a northern island in Japan where the local deer population is large and disproportional to the local resources. In other words, they are pests over there. Hunting season is long and there is no bag limit. The few hunters that participate are encouraged to kill as many deer as they can. Based on the local circumstances, his hunting practices are perfectly ethical.

On Hokkaido, deer are overpopulated but there is a shortage of deer hunters (partly because it is so difficult to own a gun of any kind in Japan) and a shortage of deer meat consumers (for whatever reason). So the willing hunters are doing a public service by killing as many deer as they can and consuming what they can.

They'll travel half way across the world to kill whales, yet won't eat a delicious venision steak from their own back yard, weird.

It's not overly-sensitive or a matter of being politically correct, nor is it a "Witch Hunt", as you put it. It's a matter of common decency.

You've been here a bit longer than I have, surely you must be aware of the forums policy on racism. It simply isn't tolerated. That you think the term is relatively harmless is irrelevant. It's still a racial slur. I have several Japanese friends, not a one of which doesn't rankle at the term, no matter how imperceptible their reaction might be.

Inadvertent as the use may have been, I'm certain that some members found it offensive.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, perhaps you should spend a little more time reading the screen, less time running off at the keyboard.

I'm certain there are several words you might find offensive, were one to refer to you by them.

I'm not the one who's dying here....

The title of the video is "A Japanese survival knife" so that's what I stuck up there. Just in case the link was wonky or something, so folks could find it on YouTube if they were of a mind to.

Oops, didn't mean to start a war here, guys, just post something a little different.

I agree with the above poster who stated the design didn't look too sturdy. Not something I'd be interested in, personally, but thought it'd be cool to share.

Don't be disheartened amigo, sometimes threads just veer off into the weeds. As far as the knife goes it isn't my thing either but I don't think there is anything fundamentally flimsy about it.
