A Japanese Survival Knife

Actually no
I was being polite and guideing a drift out of zenophobia

Yeah I love it when folks confuse us ASKING THEM (whoever "they" are) to make crappy stuff with "them" ONLY being able to make crappy stuff. :o

Or
Asking for excellence, getting crap and keep sending it back until they learn what is excellence
Or not....
And then realize you might no longer be saving money
But you have invested so much money on the transfer, nobody will say they made a mistake

It's not overly-sensitive or a matter of being politically correct, nor is it a "Witch Hunt", as you put it. It's a matter of common decency.

You've been here a bit longer than I have, surely you must be aware of the forums policy on racism. It simply isn't tolerated. That you think the term is relatively harmless is irrelevant. It's still a racial slur. I have several Japanese friends, not a one of which doesn't rankle at the term, no matter how imperceptible their reaction might be.

Inadvertent as the use may have been, I'm certain that some members found it offensive.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, perhaps you should spend a little more time reading the screen, less time running off at the keyboard.

I'm certain there are several words you might find offensive, were one to refer to you by them.

I'm not the one who's dying here....

Yank/Brit/Jap/Ozzie, all the same thing, an abbreviation of the full nationality. Only one group chooses to be offended by their abbreviation. And no, an abbreviation of your nationality is not offensive, nor derogatory just because you choose to be offended. Time to grow up and join the rest of the adult world.

Halberdier,

If someone useing an appreviation that offends a group, then why does he need to defend or rationlize the useage
Just stop using the word that offends

Then you are grown up and have joined the adult world.

Or not....

That too!

Wow Halberdier, are you really that obtuse or just trolling for effect? Neeman took the words out of my keyboard.

If you really feel that way go to the bar and drop the N-bomb a few times.......you might not be able to finish growing up and joining the real world.

Gonna drop in, i'm not japanese, but i do have friends that are 1st-3rd generation. It's still very offensive to them. In the early 80's growing up in the south, people didn't know i was Korean, just saw the slanty eyes and would call me jap or chink, it wasn't followed by any other conversation just so they could shorten the name.

Watching Wako's videos got me interested in Bark River knives, and since i have friends in the town above him, when i stop by this winter, i hope maybe i can meet him. Learn a thing or two. Seems like a really nice guy.

Totally unrelated to the topic at hand, but I've got some ocarinas on there way from Korea right now. :D

zelda fan? if so

i'm curious as to what the standard steel is for japanese hunting/outdoors knives. I always hear talk of vg-10 only coming from japan, but never thought much as to what is the staple/common used steel there.

LOL yeah I'm a fan of the LoZ series, but that actually has nothing to do with my ocarina obsession. I just love them as an instrument. The unique sound, the way they function, and the incredible complexity that's able to be squeezed out of them by a talented player in spite of their limited range (unless it's a multi-chamber!) makes them fascinating to me. :D

I'm pretty sure that Blue-/White-paper steels are the most commonly used cutlery steels in Japan for outdoor knives, but I could be way off.

hah, nice  i saw a few up for sale when in maryland, and some over here in korea. But woodwind i played with was an alto sax, and while my fandom would love to try my hand at an ocarina, i'm trying to learn guitar now. gonna pm you a link, maybe you'll like it.

completely slipped my mind about the blue and white steels. I remember talking to someone at the california custom knife show that had some, but i was spent from the crk booth and a couple others, since i didn't win the hinderer raffle.

anyone here have any japanese knives with pics? help fill out the thread

Sorry I don't know at all, especially about good "knife dealers" all around Japan.
Some shop is tactically biased, some shop was moved, others are too small or have a limited interests,
so I've ended up to seek any shops what I prefer to visit sometimes.

Regarding online shops, they are cheap enough sometimes but many of tactical shops are ridiculously expensive,
and I'm afraid they only have city-caged hypes and movie-dellutional kids as their customers.
Toyokuni, Kanetsune, Munemasa is also famous but I wouldn't go with it.

Maybe private shops (blacksmiths, not knifemakers) are much more fun and still affordable,
and could be more open-minded with a pride of their "tools", compared to any Japanese knife merchants IMHO.

Not outdoorsy knives, but IMHO the Japanese craftsmen make the finest kitchen knives in the world by a long shot (not to disparage the few U.S. makers who make stunning knives as well...). Here's two 240mm gyutos, one white #1 kiritsuke tipped and another white #2 regular shaped. They are ridiculously fun to use.
