I just picked up an ak bowie. I can't wait to see how many rusted out car doors it will cut up befor is quits shaving hair off my arm!
This forum rocks! I'm very slow at typing so it will be hard to keep up with all this great stuff you guys are posting! It's frustrating when you are new at computers!!!

Chris you'll have the posting down within a week or less and you're doing alright now.
I'm spoiled because the WebTV is much easier to use than a real computer.
Our kids all have computers and our daughter's, in Phoenix, old computer is really slow compared to this system.
I had a heck of a time gettin' around the forum on it, because I couldnt use my back button like I do with my webbie.

you're in for a treat!!!!
Some of the old pix have new khukuris and other things on them now, but there's a untold wealth of info about HI and khukuris in the archives!!!

About the HI Bird and Trout knife..

I went to Lynn Griffith's place along wih some other guys and we tested several blades.
One of the tests was cutting a 5/16" Carriage bolt in two with the use of a vise.
The HI B & T came through with flying colors, only impacting a bit.
I used a chakma I had brought with me and in short order had the impacted area worked out and back to Scary Sharp!!!
Richard was Mightely Impressed with the knife and its edge!!!
And I am fortunate to have the very 1st one made!!!

One of these days there will be a new HI Tomahawk and a new Old Southwestern style Bowie to go with it, but I believe I will wait now until Gelbu gets some more master kamis working in Birghorka as they're having enough trouble keeping up with the demand for the regular supply of khukuris and besides Uncle Bill doesn't need anymore headaches or special projects right at the moment.

I recently had the opportunity to use the AK Bowie to chop up about 60 LB of pork ribs into 2” to 3” long pieces. The bone was always severed cleanly. It worked extremely well with no sign of edge damage when viewed with a 60x magnifier. I had expected some rolling or chipping but it did not happen. I was impressed as some bones stopped the AK Bowie cold (required a second blow). The Bowie left deep and large hack marks in the plastic chopping board. I was seriously considering putting on hearing protection due to the noise the knife made. At the end of the section the knife would only scrape skin but it would still cut meat well. About 10 swipes with the medium stones of the Sharpmaker and then removing the burr with my strop it was shaving sharp.

Yvsa--Would you please explain the procedure used to cut the bolt? I've been wanting to try that with some of my knives, but my brain won't let my arm do it. Thanks

Al all you need is a Big Vice and some carriage bolts.
First open the vice wide enough for your knife blade and bolt.
Put the head of the bolt outside the vice jaws and place the knife's edge on the bolt and gently tighten up until it's snug.
( And you might want to put a piece of hardwood behind the bolt if the vice jaws are hard, however we didn't do this.)
Then keep turning the vice handle in until the bolt is cut in two or the knife's edge rolls.

Be careful to keep the knife square with the vice jaws and bolt so it doesn't jump outside ways and hurt you or anyone else.

PS If you're doing this with khukuris be sure and use the harder part of the edge in the sweet spot.
I doubt the point could be used without it jumping out, but the softer area by the cho will definitely impact, possibly pretty bad.

My foggy memory agrees with your foggy memory Uncle Bill.

I though rib chopping would have been hard on a knife. Perhaps I am mistaken. Does anyone know if being dead and frozen weakens the bone structure? In the unlikely event that I get a deer next year I will have to keep leg chopping in mind.
