This is really exciting!

I came to Japanese Sword Art training 14 years ago, and it had immense impact on my life.....breathing, walking, fighting, eating, sleeping(buckwheat hull pillows, anyone?), bathing, heated, self flushing Japanese toilet seats:D......

Sleeping with one for 15 years now. And just ordered a brand new one a few days ago with a few extra pounds of hulls. Glad i'm not the only one around here.

Cool stuff Scott.

Great project Scott.
I especially enjoy the wip photos you have posted.
Will we be seeing more photos?

Thanks Mark..

Oh yes. Just trying to get the hamon where I want it and the last little cosmetics. And the stand. I should have a hamon photo to show later today.

Hmm.... buckwheat hull pillows. Will have to investigate this.

Just a tremendous amount of work....and it shows, Scott. I have found some of your designs in the past that I didn't care for too much, but have always admired your technical skills.

This piece I am in love with.

Buckwheat hull pillows are fairly heavy and you DO NOT want to just fall into one when you go to bed, likely you will break your neck. The pillow shapes itself to your neck/head/face, and it provides unequalled support and posture improvement. My buckwheat hull pillow probably weighs about 10 lbs.

Thanks a lot Steven... I appreciate your feedback on this.. I value it quite a bit. As to my designs.. well I have a feeling I will look back on my career and realize that I started showing and selling my work too early. I jumped in and became 'public' so quickly that the evolution of my work is out here for all to see. Like I said earlier.. this one will change my work. Definitely in terms of what I consider good fitment and craftsmanship at least. There is a conversation going on amongst some local artists and artisans in my area about the difference between 'art' and 'craft'. I feel like the early stages of my work have focused more on 'art' rather than 'craft'.

Here is a picture I took for somebody who has some potential interest in this project... Just shows the habaki fitment in the koiguchi...

Now that is a wonderful detail shot!

Everything comes together beautifully and the fit looks perfectly snug.

Thanks for posting that.

"Superbe", Thank you for the sharing. A very beautiful work emphasized by your pictures....

Bravo !!!

A good beginnig day ...

Had to take a break to do some other things. But I'm at the finish line. Although I forgot to take the shot of just the blade in the tsuka.. and the stand picture didn't work out. So... will post a couple more tomorrow.

Still trying to figure out how to photograph these near mirror polishes. You can't tell from the photos.. but that blade is a mirror.

Scott,

That is really fine! Wish you could have been in Little Rock this time, but hope to see you and some of your explorations at Blade.

John

Blade Forums has led me to start liking these Japanese designs more and more. Great thread, and great knife OP

congrats! or should i say おめでとう(omedetou)!
can't wait to see the stand too...and remember to display and store it with the edge up and handle on left...

keep it up!

Gorgeous work Scott. This is a wonderful piece.

Moroha Zukuri is one of my favorites as well and I love the execution of yours.

Congrats!

Ha! Good thing the stand photo didn't turn out. I had it completely the opposite. :-)

Thanks again folks..... Can't wait to get into the next one. I have single beveled blade forged with orishigane welded onto one side.. it will get some diver-salvaged old growth white pine mounting.

okay.. two more and I'm done. The stand isn't quite done.. still need to finish shaping the uprights. And still fiddling with the mokume inlay....

I have other more 'studio' versions.. but this is my favorite. Seems to be the most honest... without worrying about capturing every detail of the hamon.

Thanks to everybody for following this work. I believe you will see more of this coming out of my shop very soon.

You did a terrific job all around and the blade is outstanding..... :)

Scott that's absolutely stunning and a great WIP to boot. I can understand your mind set completely, I trained in various Martial Arts for 30 years and know what benefits immersing yourself in certain aspects can bring into your life. Great work as always.

Regards.

Steve.

Gorgeous Scott!!! The habaki, the subtle texturing to the koiguchi and ???(spacer), and that silky finish you gave the handle and saya are among the features that stand out for me. Your camera skills aren't that shabby either.:D

Man, that's nice.

It's superb.

Someone is going to have a real treasure!
