A knife a water bottle and a flint, what would you take? If you were given the opportunity to be dropped off in the middle of, lets say washington state, and had to thrive for a month, what three items would you want with you if that was part of the deal?

Remember only three items, and explain why and how they would be used to save your a$$. Nothing stupid because part of the deal is to THRIVE for a MONTH without being rescued or searched for. Nothing ungodly or HUGE, just three realistic items which would help you set up shelter, catch food, get clean water, and thrive for a month during late fall in washington state.

Lets say no guns, no tents, no sleeping bags, and no "miracle kits."
Just you in the bush with three items which can easily go down with you when you are dropped off. Fishing kits or first aid kits can count as one item, just don't go overboard about it. I guess we could include altoid psk's, but just the tins with what is inside of them as an item, no psk's in a baggy full of stuff 'cause that is pushing it.

Let's see how this goes, J.

i think maybe a pot.

There are lots of trees in Washington (like here) so shelter is covered.

Personally I would want these three items:

1. Knife (my emerson commander)
-my most useful tool and I'm familiar with it
-create other tools such as bow, spear, etc.
-could use for creating fire with firesteel or flint
-skinning game or filleting fish

2. Metal cup
-boil water
-make food
-carry water

3. Firesteel (my magnesium bar)
-starting fire (of course)
-extra tinder
-in case I can't find flint nearby
-mobility (fire wherever I need it)

Well, that is my list of three, let's see how yours goes, J.

Are we assuming proper attire for Washington in the fall? Just asking for further clarification as it plays a major role on what I'd take.

I meant the fishing kit is an example of one item, and the first aid kit could be counted as another single item, same as if you had an altoid psk, counts as one item.

Oh yes, two pairs of good clothes for the weather.

a knife 4"fixed blade for obvious reasons
a canteen cup boil water,cook,eat,dig,etc.
lightweight tarp tent,Hudson bay pack, ground cloth

Tyrantblade

1. Knife - good carbon steel fixed blade 4-5 1/2" blade
- also my most useful type of tool

2. Metal quart pot or sturdy can
- boil and carry water, cook

3. 6x6 to 8x10 Tarp or sheet of plastic
- easy, portable water and windproof shelter top

Everything else I can make or do without.

Well I would say a knife definitely, if I couldn't grab some sort of machete or fixed blade then one of my EDC folders would have to do---Spyder Delica or Endura, Kershaw JYD 2 or mini Cyclone, or CS medium Voyager, or SAK (not cheating, any ONE of those). Some kind of firestarted (flint, Magnesium bar, NATO matches). My woodcraft/wilderness survival is not the best (I'm a city boy, Cub Scouts was a LONG time ago) so I will concede I probably would not be able to THRIVE in the wilderness for months--but with item 3 a COMPASS, I could stand a good chance to get the hell out and survive to reach civilization.

Paracord would be damned useful too. When you think on it, while you can break or tear things w/out a knife, it would really tough to get around many problems without being able to tie stuff. Hmmm, something to consider in my bug-out bag and so on?

I'm mighty relieved you allowed clothes. Else I was forced to say two shoes and a pair of pants. Not being allowed a good pistol with handloads is a nuisance though. Hmm, a new Bic lighter, a dutch oven, and a decent (full tang, cross guard, etc.) mid sized sheath knife (is wrapping a few feet of piano wire on the hilt considered a different item or cheating?).

Nah, I don't see why it would be, some of these other guys, myself included, have knives with paracord wrapped around the handles for grip :D. I'm lenient, as long as it generally counts as one item.

Well, if we have two pairs of clothes for the weather, that makes it a pretty easy ordeal. As anyone who's ever lived in the Pacific NorthWet wouldn't be out without synthetics/wool and at least some type of rain gear(shell or poncho).
So with evergreens for shelter, a 99% chance of rain for fresh water plus mountain streams and rivers, and all sorts of critters to eat I think I'd be living high on the hog. That said, my three items would be:
Fallkniven F1-general cutting duties, shelter making, tool/trap making.
Ferrocerium Rod-Easier than friction fires in damp high altitudes that get little sunlight due to tree cover.
Last slot could be any number of things really, all the bases are covered really. If rifle+ammo counts as one item, that'd probably be it. If not, or it's unreasonable, a 1.5 quart pot.
Ideally I'd like a fishing kit and other goodies nestled inside that pot to make use of space economy, since that's my typical setup, but I could still thrive with the above. Just have to make more stuff.

As someone that is not good at friction fire i got to have my fire steel a knife is a giving. but i want at list a 2Q pot maybe even a gallon sized pot. This way i could cook food in it collect water and hold enough water to last me for a day or two. Its easier to boil a gallon of water one time and not doing it one Q at a time. I guess if i practice my friction fire..... i could carry Para cord to help get food...

Give me a chopper. Say something in the 9-11inch range. A nice 2 quart pot and a firesteel. The rest I can improvise in the field using the others :D Course if I was really to do something like this I'd find a way to include a full size ax,a tarp, and lotsa para cord in the gear list.

1.) 20" HI Ang Khola (small knife and steel come in the sheath)

2.) Some way of making fire, probably a mag block & striker

3.) Some kind of cooking kit (I like the MSR Duralight Classic, all nests into one, but if that is stretching things too far, I'd just take the 2 liter pot).

Three "things"? people are things aren't they?
1. Ray Mears 2.Les Stroud and 3.Bear Grylls

Ray Mears to "bushcraft" a comfortable camp site and find food, Les Stroud to film the adventure and play the theme music and Bear Grylls to do stupid dangerous things so i won't get bored.
lol!
:D

A good solid folding knife.
A hatchet.
A tarp.

The knife will be used to gather the cordage material to make a bow drill to start fire, arrows, snares, bark for making buckets, and putting the finishing touches on a bow.
The hatchet obviuosly would be for fire wood gathering, roughing out the Bow...etc.
The tarp is for rain water collection/protection.

People need food, clothes, and shelter; if you have those you can thrive.

damn, you pretty well nailed mine. 'Sept change your Emerson to my RAT7. I'd have said my backpack (cuz it contains everything right down to my hobo stove) but I think there was a no-no about 'em up there in the original post somewhere.
