It has to be a folder. My choice would be Kabar Dozier.

But what do I know, I am new to this game. :p

I 3rd it! One heck of a nice folder and probably the best deal in knifedom.

Even if someone is accustomed to carrying $400-$500 customs, you will find things to appreciate in a Calypso and not feel totally "underknifed". Light, fairly strong and good cutters. What more could you want for that much?

I just got my Spyderco Byrd today. It is a really nice knife even better that the Dozier that sells for the same price. They are less than $20.

ZimmerDN, Welcome to the forums! I just ordered a Spyderco Calypso Jr. in grey FRN from www.newgraham.com . Only problem is they are 40.58. This is 10.00 more than your expressed wishing to spend. The Calypso Jr. is a great knife as everyone has stated. The grey FRN Jr. comes in VG-10 and is a very good steel from Spyderco.

Ka-Bar Dozier, any of them. $20, doesn't get much better. Of course for $20 more you get a Caly Jr., great piece there.

Queen Country Cousin or Utility slipjoint folders in d2 steel.

Dozier/k-bars are good too.
