A knife for $30 or less, what would you get?

Victorinox SAK. The Soldier and the Spartan are two of the most useful knives at any price.

Byrd Meadowlark or BM Pica, or...
add a couple bucks and get yourself a Spyderco Calypso jr or Delica.

You can't go wrong with the KaBar Dozier. I have been very pleased with it. I've only used it to cut light stuff (snack bags, boxes, etc) and its worked perfectly. If you found a good deal on shipping, you could get the Dozier plus a small SAK for the $30 bucks (give or take a couple) and have two good quality knives.

If you are looking for something a little heavier duty, I've seen Buck 110s in KMart for $29.95.

Let me throw the Kershaw Phantom II in the mix. I use one as my edc, good lock, decent steel, Holds an edge reasonable well, and it is easy to put an edge back on. For $32 it's not a bad deal. You would not be disapointed. And you can probably find one at your local Wal-Mart.

Yu can get Kershaw Vapor II for $25 or less. Regular (= smaller) Vapor will run you $20 or less. Both are nice, Vapor II fits my hand better, i got both and like what i bought - good buy for the money.

I got my plain edge Kershaw K.O. Vapor at Walmart for $20 bucks. It's a high quality tool for the money.

Why don't you buy a Sebenza?

SORRY - I could NOT resisist! It seems whenever someone asks a question like this person has, someone always comes in and tries to convince them that their knife requirements and desires are not REAL because they are not buying a $300 Sebenza or more expensive custom. Set your budget, get advice and go forward.

It sounds like the Calypso, Jr is the knife to go with it. I have never had one of them, but I am buying my nephew a nice first knife this summer for his birthday and this one looks as if it will be getting some serious looks.

Good luck with your decision and welcome to your wallets' "last stand."

Calypso Jr is a great choice - ergonomically sound, great steel, decent handle.

After buying six benchmades I bought a Caly Jr and was impressed.

from Ragnar. I got one of the "Normark" labeled ones when he still had 'em in stock for $19 but even at $29 it's a good buy. It's not a one-hander but a nice pocket knife.
