A friend of mine works with a guy that can only be described as a north eastern sheeple. But one that is slowly coming around to merely being "not a knife guy." They both work in a job that necessitates a sharp blade on a daily basis, and the guy is always borrowing my friend's pocket knife. My friend carries a spyderco volpe, while a nice and pretty knife- it is also quite large, so the fact that the other guy has stopped running screaming from the room when it is brought out (and actually asks to borrow it) is quite a feat. Recently my friend observed this other guy attempting to open a box with his keys, and got the idea that this guy may appreciate having a pocket knife of his very own. The delima is the aforementioned "not a knife guy"-ness. He is afraid that if he bought the guy a nice-ish knife that it would soon be dull and put in a drawer to gather dust because of an inability and lack of desire to sharpen said knife. I recommended a kershaw chive or leek on the high end, and a SAK, case, or buck slip joint on the lower end (leaning toward the SAK for utility, buck or case for classic "my grandfather carried one of these so they can't be bad" appeal). I also recommended a gerber "super knife" clone that got a good review on this sight (as a never needs sharpening and is inexpensive alternative). I know you are wondering if there is a question burried in here somewhere so here it is... Would you buy a knife for a friend that you would not buy for yourself? I ask this not because I (or my friend) would not buy one of these for my(him)self, but because the knife is supposed to be a not-quite-secret-santa gift, and be in the $20 to $30 range, and my friend and I would both be hard pressed to find a knife that we would buy for ourselves in that range. So would you, what would it be, and why?
