Well, My little brother just joined cubs... They go on many camping trips and such, and I beleive it is cubs that lets them carry pocket knives... I was thinkin, for christmas or his birthday, I would get him a pocket knife to carry with him... However, I want to get one he's: A)going to like B)going to be able to use/handle and isn't dangerous for him and C)is a good, reliable knife that will hold up what abuse he may put it through.. well, post if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Oh, I also don't want to spend too much, seeing as it's his first knife, and I wanted to know if you guys think it's a good idea, AT ALL to get him a knife (he is only 8 years old)...

I was kinda looking at this,

its something like 13.99$ at 1sks..

What you need to do is just show him your collection.

Make a note of what knives he looks at with that look.

Get him something with the features of that knife, unless it was your ultra-tactical-slasher-black-coated knife :)

I was planning on getting both of my brothers knives, and I already have an extra Sharpmaker that's going to them. My 10 year old brother is in Scouts, my 18 year old brother is now an instructor for a military-esque training organization for teenagers. Needless to say, I'm going to get them different knives :)

The younger one seemed quite interested in locking mechanisms of my various knives. You don't know how happy I was to see that :) Both of my brothers were interested, actually, but upon hearing the prices of some of the knives...

I'll probably get a strong lockback to go to the younger brother, like a Delica. For the 18 year old, I might get a utility fixed blade like the Becker BK/7.

****edited to add:

Hmm, with all the problems that I've heard about frame-lock KISS-style knives, I really wouldn't get that Schrade knife. To me, when buying a knife as a gift to my brothers, I would want them to have the best, simply because I would hate to see them cut themselves badly due to an unproven knife. Especially an 8 year old!

I think you should stick with proven quality stuff, CRKT has some nice knives that go for under $30 on ebay. Maybe an M16Z? I've got one, and the thin handle might be just the thing for a smaller hand. I actually have an aluminum handled one incoming, and bids on other M16's too. I just like the design too much!

I can't imagine anything more appropriate than a Swiss army knife...I got one at that age and I was VERY happy with it...I would suggest the new one-hand opening model or the "beginner model "my first Victorinox"

Thanks, alpha.. I will try that... and RL, I was just waiting for someone to mention an SAK... I don't know why, but I am not a fan of SAKs, I have a few, and I beleive my 2nd knife was an SAK (after a shrade uncle henry) and it really doesn't appeal to me much, nor do i ever use it. I guess I should talk to him, see if he likes SAK's.. But I would MUCH prefer getting him a locking knife, with ONE blade ;) Just my preference, I guess... I should probably discuss this with my mom, as well...

Well, you can get SAKs with a lockback...but I don't want to push them on you...

BTW, I would recommend against the knife in the pic that you posted...it looks similar to the K.I.S.S. and there was a thread a few days ago suggesting that the design is very unsafe (in the sense that too much of the blade is exposed, leading to cuts when you reach for the knife in your pocket).

another idea might be a very small (e.g. 3-4") fixed blade like a Fallkniven...

The kid just joined the Scouts, get him a traditional utility pattern
camp knife like those made by Camillus. You can get some really nice patterns from Queen.

Could just get him one of the most dependable knives out there: the Buck 112 Ranger

I usually don't post to say "I agree" - but I am on this one by RL!;) I'd even suggest going for a model that has a little more "stuff" on it. Victorinox makes so many models these days, I couldn't begin to suggest a particular model. I have a SwissChamp, but that's probably more than you want to spend....

There is a Swiss Army Knife that has blue scales and the Cub Scout Logo on it. My son is in scouts and has one. You can order them quickly at New Graham.

heck, for his application i dont see anything better then a good swiss army, something not too big, maybe a 4-5 tool one

Yeah, I agree it would be a good idea, but I really do not like swiss army, and I would not like to spend the money on a swiss army, as i think he would get more use out of a nice folder...

Don't get him something too different... at that age coolness factor can go one of several ways... he may end up being ostrasized becuase his equipment is different... you can't go wrong with a SAK, but perhaps waiting to see what everyone else gets, or even organizing a group purchase and getting the same knives... after all, the Cubs are the first uniforms that many of us get to wear.

Another thing...
Stay away from that first knife you were thinking about getting... it's got an unsafe lock... see the thread on KISS knives from crkt on this forum.

I'd either go with one of the cammilus camp knives or the swiss army camper knife, you could even pair it with a mora sheath knife and have a great combo.

Gotta say, some of the suggestions here would be about my 60th choice ... different strokes for different folks, eh?

At any rate, I think the best thing to do is ask what kind of knife he'd like. If not asking him outright, the idea about letting him look at your collection and then watching which ones catch his fancy is a good one. For the record, I'd suggest a small sized SAK Tinker or scout model.

Lastly, with or without a lock, the boy is darn likely to cut himself (we all did, right!? :D ) so I'd spend a lot of time teaching him knife safety ... and buy some Band-aids.

4 GOOD choices:

SOG Pocket PowerPliers
Victorinox Deluxe Tinker
Cold Steel medium plain-edge Voyager
Spyderco plain-edge Native

Glockman, you sure love those SOG pliers, don't you? :) I'm probably going to get a Powerlock second, direct from SOG.

Out of all the reviews of multitools I've read, SOG's tools really seem to stand out (and most of the reviewers prefer them over Leatherman tools). namrepus, you might want to take a look at those, if you're going to get a non-traditional tool knife.

I had a Victorinox Tinker as a kid, I loved it... Nice and thin, had all the devilish tools a mischevious kid could use (to take apart desks, drill holes in desks, cut things up). The two blades got their fair share of bloodings :), and the awl was really useful for... kid stuff. Hehe. I'd definitely recommend the Tinker over the corkscrew model, since I don't think your brother will be opening up wine bottles anytime soon.

The Super Tinker might be a better value in that it also has the crappy scissors (says Micra-spoiled me). But to me it has crossed the thickness line, making it an unseemly bulge in a pocket.
