A knife for little brother

Lastly, with or without a lock, the boy is darn likely to cut himself (we all did, right!? :D ) so I'd spend a lot of time teaching him knife safety ... and buy some Band-aids.
Excellent point mnblade. That's at least as important as the choice of blade, if not more, imo.

I'd stay away from skeleton handled folding knives. They're not terribly safe for adults and definately not good for a kid.
SAK would be a good thing to consider, although I don't prefer it much.
For multitool, SOG definately got it right ;), but I don't think he want to carry a multitool so heavy.

My suggestion is to stick with the BSA offerings for such a knife. You may find that the adult leaders prohibit knives that do not look like standard issue, the result being that he may not be able to take the knife along on scout activities. It may also become a "collectible", at least to him. My son gets a kick out of my BSA marked knives (pocket knife and whittler from the late 60's), and it brings back alot of fond memories for me.

personally I would go for something with a sheeps foot blade or alternatively something more multitool-like

the main reason being you dont want some politically correct parent complaining and you dont want him stabbing himself either while he gets used to working with a blade...

I bought one of the Cold Steels that you have pictured and the lock failed the day I bought it :( I would suggest:
-Spyderco Dragonfly
-SAK Soldier (cool name too)
-Buck 303 Cadet
-Cold Steel Medium Clip Voyager- MUCH more durable than the aforementioned knife
-Spyderco Calypso Jr (SMKW has em on closeout for 25 bucks)
-Kershaw Vapor (cheap at walmart, as is the 303)
-Buck 110
-Spyderco Civilian  ;)

How about the small Leatherman plier. Not the Micra but the original little Leatherman plier with all the usual goodies. It's about the right size for a kid and is not terribly expensive if he loses it. Otherwise, I would say SAK. This is a kid and he only needs a very basic knife. There's plenty of time to get him Spyderco Delicas and other "fancy" locking knives in the future. Start him off simple.
