A knife for my Marine

I would recommend going with a HEST, as small fixed blades seemed to get used more, And the HEST has multiple functions. When a firned of mine got back from overseas he came back with a Leatherman Charge TTI and a Rat1 beat to absolute hell, and somehow still worked.

If this is the case with Leatherman and ESEE Rat, why would you recommend a HEST? Just for the bottle opener feature?

A tough folder would be best. A zt 300 or 301 would be great. Not too expensive, tough as nails and will not fail as might a cheap knife.

Check out Foxknivesusa for their Predator 1 in desert camo. Can be had with the Marine logo. May do the job.

Tracy,

I would ask him his MOS. Then find out if his unit allows a carry knife and if they have any restrictions on the type or size blade that can be carried. Lastly see if the others in his unit prefer a specific blade. This may be due to some specific job he does regularly where experience has shown one type of knife works better than others. He may also have a preference of a fixed blade or a folder so before you spend money askimg those few questions will help. My unit for instance did not encourage fixed blades that showed under the blouse while in garrison but rarely said anything when we were in the field.

Hope that helps.

I have sent friends and relatives quality knives upon deployment for years now. The ones that seem to get the most use, are a quality multi tool, or a dang good folder. Big fixed blade knives are not all that usefull to the guys in the sandbox.

I had an older Gerber(thinking MarkII) in any evet, it was double edged set up for carry on pistol belt; since I had retired really didn't need it for the purpose it was intended. Put it in a package for a local Marine heading for second tour of Iraq; he loved it, has been back for some time and safe.Guess it worked O.K.

Big cool-lookin survival or fighting knives get left in the hooch. They're too big and heavy and aren't that useful for a soldier. Get him something small, tough, and corrosion resistant that falls within the EDC realm. There's also a high likelyhood that whatever you get him will be lost or stolen, so keep that in mind before you send him an heirloom. IMHO a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is the perfect EDC knife for a soldier. Just don't get him the one in Army digicam!

I agree with the winkler II knife as well. It will be expensive, but you can look at it as a tool as much as a knife. It will hold up under harsh use. Look up "Winkler II" on YouTube

Thanks everybody for the input. He has carried a case saddlehorn for a couple years so for small folders I'll probably stick to that size or get saks. He really likes my spyderco endura so I will get one of those. He carries a wave mulitool. Finding the fixed blade is where I'm stuck the esee3 seems really nice but would the rat series be a better way to go with the thought of loss or theft in mind? Would the bk14 be a good choice.

Am I making the proper choices with the other blades when it comes to weight and comfort.
Thanks in advance.

Victorinox Ranger or SwissTool as multitool.
Zero Tolerance 0350 or 0550 as folder.
Fällkniven F1, Bark River Gunny S35VN or Bark River Bravo 1 S35VN as fixed blade.

id really reccomend the hest fixed blade. small, coated, and the versatility is amazing. It is what i use in the field and has served me well. the prybar and thewirebreaker notch are extreamly useful. and the sheath that comes withit is fantastic.

Just gonna throw out the Winkler II series belt knife. Excellent size for utilities. Not heavy in the least. Super tough and Caswell finish is great and totally subdued. The sheath is really outstanding too. Just my .02.

I am Marine Infantry and use a Winkler II belt knife as well as a cold steel recon 1 tanto point folder! Two of the best knives I have ever used

Izula2, he'd get much more use out of a smaller fixed blade. Fantastic quantity, plus you won't be breaking the bank. Of it gets lost or whatever it's certainly not the end of the world.
