O.K., So he's not my Uncle, but some months ago I got a Email on my website from a gentleman inquiring about the possibility of making 3 knives, all the same that was similar to one that I made on my website. Then he proceeded to tell me that he was turned on to my website through conversations with Gary and Barb. Now, none of you know or probably care who Gary and Barb are, but they are the parents of My Brother-in-law Doug. (my sisters husband) Turns out that the guy that got a hold of me was in fact Dougs uncle Dave from Iowa.
Uncle Dave (as he came to be known and called by me) and I, exchanged a few emails and telephone conversation. turns out, He has a son and a son in law that he wanted to do something special for. The knife idea came up from Dougs folks since both of the boys are into knives. Uncle Dave himself though it sounded like a cool idea and after looking at some pics on my website, picked out something he liked and that started the ball a rollin.
Now, Uncle Dave was new and green to the custom knife world. So, I wanted to make sure that I did the project for him, but did not want to give him a stroke with the estimate on what it would cost him. So, I tried to give him the best deal possible, and then sweeten the deal a little so I wouldn't lose him.
The deal was this, If he gave me till Christmas of this year,(2013) I would make two knives as close to identical as possible in the style he picked out for the boys. Then, to reward his thinking out of the box, and for flipping the bill on such a thoughtful gift. I was going to do something special for him, in the same style that would make the boys a little jealous, Lol. He loved the idea, and project got underway.
Now unfortunately, I didn't have time to get pics of the first two knives. Turns out, Uncle Dave was traveling through this area a couple of months ago, and asked if he could stop by to see the shop, I of coarse accepted, and literally finished the two knives a day before he came by, and off he went with him. But, I did get pics of Uncle Daves knife, and here it is..............

Specs:
6in. hidden tang blade 3/16 thick 01 hollow ground, 57 RC
11 in. OAL
Curly Maple handle, red inlays, brass furniture
Vine fileworked spine, and what I call rising sun filework on figergaurd and pommel.
Medium brown dyed handmade, handtooled, handstiched sheath.

I was really glad to do this project, Its fun for me to get back to doing one offs and doing stuff to let my more artistic side shine. Not to mention that this will also end up as a family heirloom according to Uncle Dave. The thought that it may be admired by people well after I'm dead and gone really makes me feel good that it turned out well.

Thanks for lookin!

Theres so many things I could say Todd, but I am rarely surprised when seeing your work. I always expect it to be outstanding, and you always deliver.

Uncle Dave is a lucky fella. I've pawed this one, it feels as fantastic as it looks. It's very smooth and comfy in hand , but leaves no doubts that it's every bit an extremely capable tool.

Absolutely fantastic Todd. Your work is the kind that will still be trucking even after we are all dead and gone. Love this, thank you for sharing.
