A knife is NOT a pry bar

Thank you...here's a closeup :) (BTW, just want to confirm that the Strider BD may have a chisel-like "point" but it is not chisel-ground or flat on one side :) )

PA, no problem :)

WOW! I went to my local knifedealer today...I asked him to pull out the "good stuff" and I nearly passed out when he showed me the Spyderco Dive Probes...somehow I just couldn't leave without these collector pieces :)

It's been a long time since I had a glowing oppurtunity to knock Cold Steel!

Yet at the same time I find myself gawking at the new Night Force...

So here's my less-than-usually biased assessment. Non Carbon V Cold Steels (that is to say, non Camillus made), are not hard use knives. They can be nice knives, but when you need to do crazy crap you better be busting out the better hardware.

Hey RL thanx for the pics, I haven't seen those knives in a long time. Brings back memories of when I first started collecting.
Thanx 4 the memories.:D

Hi Clint!

Few questions:
I own CS 29 LT. Is your CS 3" a tanto? It is such a small knife. I am thinking to get one as my EDC while the 4" would be back up SD knife. Does the handle feel comfortable to use?

On Tanto point. How do you sharpen that? Is it possible to keep the secondary point sharp and pointy?

TO be or not to be...

Can one, or can one not use a knife as a prybar...

Any Knife can be used as a prybar, and may or may not fail as one.

I think if the situation calls for it, the decision is made and one must accept that the knife, once used as a prybar, may never be the same, that it may never be a knife again.

A knife is NOT a pry bar

No, but it damned well should be able to take it if you have to use it as one in a real emergency. It might not work very well as a knife afterwards if the lock or pivot is messed up, but it shoulc be able to do the job when it needs doing.

Hello, BaliSwinger.

No, it is a clip point.

It is only 3". I personally think a 4" blade is small.:D I have the 3" knife with 3 7/8" handle. I also have long hands and wish the handle was 1/2" longer and 1/4" taller. That said, the handle holds well and I have no problems with the handle slipping when stabbing the phone book (or the odd wood block:))

Which one, the 3" or 4"? Yes, there are comfortable handles on both. The only time the handle would hurt my hand was after repeated stappings in the "natural grip" (saber grip with thumb down). The discomfort was light and after many stabs so it it not a concern. I love the way the 4" knife(5" handle) filled my hand. The handle could be used as a kubotan if need be.

I have no experience on sharpening tantos, but the secondary point can be rounded slightly and still function well.

FullerH, I know you where not trying to start an arguement, but my reply somehow sounded like a retort. Please do not feel I am argueing with you, in fact I agree completely with you. A knife needs to be an emergency prybar.

The lock is fine, the edge is fine(have been using this past week), the blade(sans point) is fine. I can still cut and pry the hell out anything with this knife. A damn good emergency prybar IMO!

BTW (1) What should I do with my tipless knife? Dull it and use it as a trainer, and sometimes prybar.;) Should I put it in a vice and hang wieght off the handle until the lock snaps? Should I find an old thrown old frig and pry the door off?

BTW(2) Today the mail man delivered my new toy! A 3" Cold Steel El Lobo with recurved blade and serrations! I think I'll shred those old shoes before I throw them out:D
