I really like the Case mini copperlock but I'm not crazy about 440hc. Are there other makers, either custom or factory, who make a similar size of traditional lockback (about 3.5" closed) in a different steel?

GEC makes their #72 pattern lockback in 1095 carbon steel in the Northfield and Tidioute brands, but they're a little bigger at 3-7/8" closed. Here's mine in burnt orange jigged bone.

Canal Street's Pinch lockback is also at 3 7/8" and is available in D2 or in 440C under the newer Ka-bar Dog's Head series. If you would prefer to go smaller, then Queen makes a small lockback at 3" closed with Zebrawood scales.

As a side note, Case's Trusharp has been reported here by others as 420HC, not 440.

I'll second the Canal Street Pinch. I was very surprised how thin and light it is but comfortable in the hand. Now if I could thin down that D2.....

What I can think about a small backlock .... the Buck 55 comes in my mind. I have none, but there are some guys here, that own that one :)

Kind regards
Andi

Have a look at the Buck 501. On their website a custom can be ordered with S30V if the fancy strikes you. Normal production model comes in 420HC.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I looked at all those knives very closely and decided to order a 501 from the Buck Custom Shoppe in S30V with jigged Asian water buffalo scales. Folks seem to really like the 501 for EDC carry. Can't wait to get it.

I already own a Custom Shoppe 110 with ram horn scales, so I know the fit and finish coming out of the Custom Shoppe is top notch.

They are a truly nice size for EDC, and are a very capable knife:thumbup:
Congrats, and can't wait to see pics of it!

I know you've ordered, but here's one for the future: MOKI make a bone jigged lockback in VG-10 that has action and finish that rivals a custom, real precision job.

Regards, Will

About the Buck customs. I got a 110 a few months ago in buffalo with s30v. I was really blown away by the quality for 110 bucks. The fit, finish and grinds are perfect. I mean per-fecto. They are a superb value and I'm not sure you can get that quality anywhere else for close to that price in that quality steel with a Bos heat treat no less!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brother, you ain't kidding. The fit and finish on my Custom Shoppe 110 is just plain beautiful, IMHO. Btw, can you post some pics of your buffalo scales? I ordered my 501 in jigged buffalo, and I'd love to see what it looks like on other folks' knives.

Here's my 110 in rams horn.
