A knife newbie needs some advice.

if you are prying with knife tips, look into getting a countycomm pocket prybar and/or screw-key

Exactly. I bought a $3.50 mini pry bar myself, just to save myself the temptation of prying with a knife blade. We all know not to do it, but sometimes I also put the frozen pizza in the oven before it's fully preheated or eat raw cookie dough. Having a cheap pry tool handy, however, should prevent me from prying with a folding knife.

I just thought of something, im pretty handy, is it possible/advisable to make your own blade(since i can ultimately customize em),
if so, do u guys know any easy to understand step by step tutorials?
and which metal would u advise?

You can make your own knives pretty easily, but I am not sure steel will be too easy to get a hold of. use google and type in your search query, and then "site:bladeforums.com". search for "how to make a knife", "steel for making a knife" ect.

Thought it's worth mentioning schrade went out of business a few years ago. What you would really be buying is a taylor knife which is the same company that made your pos smith and wesson knife. I haven't tried that particular knife out myself but everything else I've handled from that company has been garbage. Lot of other good suggestions here though. Becker, esee, mora, condor all have great reputations.

I personally carry a woodsman pro from blind horse knives. Not sure if there your style but they do an awesome job on there o1, holds an edge real we well and touches up nice and easy.

Yeah, ive read it somewhere, bad business with wallmart?
But as far as the reviews i could find it was a great knife.

to answer your saw question, skip the cable/wire saws. Any arborist supply or rona type store will have small folding saws or larger with sheaths, go for something like that to save shipping and shop local. Beleive it or not a basic toolbox size carpenters saw with a 10 or 12 in blade are fantastic saws and not very heavy with a nice D handle for extended use. Make a cardboard and ducttape sheath and throw it in your pack. Good for around the house as well so you will get good value for it.
You said 100 grams/3.6 oz for the knife. Those blanks you were looking at will be quite heavy.
Find a store local to you that deals in mora knives from sweden, they should be everywhere in your neck of the woods. A 4 in mora with sheath will be around 100grams and will do everything you need backpacking, they are highly regarded around here and very affordable. Good slicers and great wood carvers.
You can also get mora blade blanks in many sizes and styles. I suggest buying a basic mora#2 or an 840mg clipper and a blade blank you like, both should not cost more than 30 to 40$ together.

Go cheap and functional when you are first starting out, then after some experience you will know what works for you and what you might want in your next purchase.
You should look into opinel knives from france for your folder to save on shipping. Should be local for you as well, great flat ground knives with a locking ring and cheap 10 to 20 bucks depending on size. I have had an opinel#8 for 25 yrs and is still a good functional knife.

You could get all of these for the 80$ including the tax.

Regards
