I was searching for a knife to take it in my trips on the mountains and after reading as much as I could about shapes and other aspects ... I think that shapewise the Big Rock Camp is what I need ... the only problem that I have is the steel 440A ... so the question is ... where can I find a similar knife, under 50-60$ but with a better steel?

Many thanks!

is the Benchmade Rant ... Thank you for this one .. the steel is definitely better not sure about the handle! Any other options?

I'm not familiar with the Big Rock knife, but this offering from Gerber looks like a great deal:

"The Gerber Prodigy Knife features a 4.8" part serrated drop point blade made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel. The blade of this Gerber knife has a non reflective black oxide finish. The Prodigy Knife has full tang construction; black hard substrate handle with textured Soft Grip overmold and notched thumb ramp for secure grip, a window punch pommel and a lanyard hole. A black hard sheath with MOLLE compatible nylon backing is included with this Gerber knife. The Gerber Prodigy Knife has an overall length of 9.8", and weighs 7 ounces. Made in the USA."

And you can easily find it for less than 50 bucks.

One Stop Knife Shop has the Ontario TAK in 1095 (non-stainless) on sale for $60. The micarta handle is probably better than the Gerber.

If you're really on a budget, you might want to consider the modern-style moras. Dimensions are going to be a little bit smaller (thickness, blade width, blade length) but definitely a steal. http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

Ragweed forge also stocks many traditional styled Scandanavian knives. If you can deal with a wood handle and possibly non-stainless steel, then something will fit your bill.

Last suggestion is to stalk the exchange. You may find a really good used blade - fallkniven, benchmade, etc. - in your range. Surprisingly, you may even find a custom for $60. Lots of new or lesser known makers will put out inexpensive working knives for low prices.

Another suggestion, xseven, a Buck Vanguard or Buck Woodsman, both under 50 bucks and with well-regarded 420HC steel.

xseven...the Cold Steel site says that the Pendleton hunters are VG-10.

Is VG-1 the same with VG-10? ... reading this "When considering a new material for a performance upgrade for the Cold Steel® Tanto, we tested seven different grades of steel including Shiro 2, V-SP-2, 10A, 440C, VG-10, ATS 34, and VG-1. Physical testing for sharpness, edge retention, point strength, shock, and ultimate blade strength showed that while many of the steels had increased performance in one or two testing categories, only one, VG-1, showed the greatest performance increases in the most critical categories. " ... I am starting to doubt the informations provided by the manufacturers ...

There have been some threads over the past few months about VG-1 and VG-10.
They are in fact two different steels made by the same company, in Japan.

What I have in mind for my trips is a Bushman for more serious work and a stainless for cooking and other ... wet jobs.
The Ontario TAK looks very nice ... thank you! ... I see that is available in D2 ... but I have to check that I can stay under 50$ ... http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=ONTAK

60 for the TAK is really a super deal.

The least I've seen it for elsewhere is 67.

And it's worth it - you're getting Micarta scales bolted to thick 1095, made in the USA.
A heckuva tough, all purpose knife that will last for many, many years...

Cold Steel has been switching this year to VG1 from AUS8.

VG1 is similar to VG10 but without some of the more expensive additives:

The carbon to Chromium ratio is quite similar. ~1.0:14
VG1 is used in some high quality Japanese chefs knives. Thom Brogan says he likes it.

It would be nice if Cold Steel identified those "critical categories". They had been using AUS8. My own guess is that VG1 gave them the best increase in edge holding over AUS8 at the best cost.

VG1 is not junk steel. My expectation based on composition is that it has better edge holding than AUS8, but I would guess it is a lesser steel than VG10. There have been a couple of reports from folks with VG1 blades. The reports have been complementary toward the edge holding ability.

Another vote for the Buck Vanguard. The KOA Bush camp is a great one too but more like 75.00/ The Alpha Wolf from KOA is worth a look as well.

Is it likely to have problems with this sort of blades? (the blade is narrower when exits the handle)

xseven...get that TAK-1. It will take care of everything up to chopping. ($64 is a good price, shop around on the internet).

Get yourself a Gerber axe if you want to chop stuff....a Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman multitool...and you are more than covered.

Really though, that TAK will do everything from cleaning fish to getting wood ready for a fire. It might be all you need.

I totally agree with you about the TAK ... the only problem is that for the moment I am stack in UK and here they keep the price but replace $ with pounds ... if I add P&P from USA ... is suddenly 100$ ... :( ... for the light chopping I am thinking of a Bushman ...

Adding another option on the list ... I dont know why ... because I am waiting for a RAT 5 in D2 ...
A. G. Russell Deer Hunter $54.95
