Ninety nine percent of my knife acquisitions, are purchased to add into my collecting hobby. For me, they are interesting objects that, (for some reason or another), I find would be a good addition to that eclectic collection that I consider a major hobby of mine.
Anyhow, as most here can probably relate to, I acquire most of my acquisitions via online purchases. There simply is very little I can obtain by going to any nearby brick and mortar stores, my having much better luck with my occasional finds at the local flea market.

Well, the online sourcing can be awesome in finding items, but not being able to physically inspect the item before making those purchases, can wind up with one not being as fully satisfied as with buying something in person. With "in person buying" one can carefully inspect before one plops down ones hard earned cash.

So, this post is to start a thread where we show knives, (fixed or folder), that we ordered via online or catalog/old school mail service, and then received a knife that simply surpassed your expectations of what you thought you'd be getting.
It could be because of it's beauty, it's fit and finish, it's functional qualities... It doesn't matter, just that it somehow was much more than you had expected it to be.
You may have had multiple experiences like that, but please try to list one here that just sticks out in your mind as being such a knife that you've acquired.

I will start with my Boker Arbolito 'El Gigante', (made in Argentina).
When I received it in the mail, I opened the box and carefully inspected her. I quickly found her to be one of the finest made knives for the money that I have ever purchased. The overall fit & finish, and the materials it was made of, were at a level that way surpassed what dollar amount it was selling for, (it having cost me $225 + s/h, & tax).

So, yes... please post up a knife that made you feel totally great upon receiving it, it having way surpassed your expectations 😊

Love the look of that knife, those scales do it justice!
Are they made of Ivory?
Unicorn Ivory 😀

Actually, it's an inexpensive one and that makes it all the more satisfying . This CASE Chestnut Bone Sodbuster really surprised me: centre blade, no blade play at all (despite being Shadow construction and not having Bird's Eye pivot- some expensive Laguioles could take notes...) great W&T and it seems to get nicer the more it's in the pocket. Perhaps I was really lucky? Glad I am :)

This one. The seller's description was weak. He said he could find no info on the manufacturer. He only had 2 blurry pictures but I could tell it was stag and a Lambsfoot made by Taylor's Eye Witness. That was enough to open my wallet. Got it at a ridiculously low price. I was very surprised at the condition, it was sharpened and lightly used, fit and finish is top quality, very smooth and snappy with a just right pull. Please excuse the oil on the blade.

I was first drawn to the Schrade wirejacks by their looks. Little did I know how hooked I'd get. I'm convinced they are the epitome of practical knife design. They may not have the panache of a custom slipjoint with exquisite or rare covers. But what "custom" can claim multiple patents or get beat to all you know what for 75 years and still be as good as new. It wasn't until I got them in hand that I realized what a practical, tough edc the large spearpoint would be or what a wonderful large clip point is. Still takes a great edge with great w&t.IMG_7663(1)_copy_1280x1280.jpg

When I ordered my Case Peanut a few years back, I wasn't sure how useful it would be. I also didn't see why, on such a tiny knife, it needed a second even tinier blade. It became one of my favorite knives, so simple and friendly and useful.

As I've thinned out my collection, I only have a handful of traditional knives left -- and ol' faithful here is one of them. :)

Definitely this one for me, a New York Knife Co advertising knife I got off the bay several years ago. The finish is amazing and the walk, talk, and snap are outstanding. On top of that, it sharpens easily to a razor edge!! This was the first of around 25 metal handled advertising knives I have since acquired because this one was so good. (Though many have been underwhelming)

My expectations weren’t super high based on number of springs, but it fits my hand so well, and is so darn useful. One of my favorites ever, and back in my rotation again lately.

Gotta agree with you on this one! My 29 hasn't left my pocket since it arrived and now I'm thinking i need a second one so i have a backup! Also that Maher and Grosh looks excellent!

Actually both of these knives Surpassed my expectations . The Northfield 83 Dark Brew because it is a much nicer user for me than I expected .

The Old Stag Pruner because it only cost $38 plus freight . The Matched Stag , Integral Bolsters , and Squared Bolsters , Blade , and Spring ends . And being an all around Solid knife .
