A Knife to step on?

Maybe I'm missing something, but what would a person stand on when they are shoving a knife deep enough into a tree to hold their weight (which sounds impossible). And how would they get back down the tree? There are a few other things I can think of which makes this sound problematic, at best, and way too risky.

I would only do this if being chased by an extremely dangerous animal, like a wild bear or a woman wanting to get married or something....
