I've been thinking about this lately and wanted to get some feedback from you all. There are so many knifemakers out there and there isn't one magazine dedicated to the trade. I know the Internet, including great places like here, do a lot for helping folks, but I think a full layout magazine would be extremely interesting.

Any thoughts on this?

As a concept, it sounds great.

On the practical side what kind of physical/financial infrastructure would it take? How would circulation be handled? Online has the advantage of instant worldwide circulation, but the subscription has no fee and there is little expoxure to those who are not already looking for us.

I think that most of us are part timers that are feeding our steel and tool addictions while relying on other jobs to keep everything going.

As an writer/editor during my "day-job," I know that financially; publishing is extremely expensive and like most things, it would have to start out extremely small and circulation would have to be fed through word-of-mouth and the Internet.

I wondered about the reasoning behind hardcopy vs. Internet and there is just something to the regular ol' printed press that still gets us -- otherwise there wouldn't be any knife magazines still in publication. I know you can basically find any knifemaking information you want on the 'net (and usually in here) if you search, but looking at it in printed form is just different somehow. I was thinking about that the other day as I was reading and looking at the 2006 Knives Annual. I can see thousands of blades on the Internet (and do and will continue to), so why does that book intrigue me so much? I don't have an answer to that.

anyway, enough of my ramblings. :D

Hi Mike,I think your idea is great.I agree with everything you said about the "printed page". I think I would probably be very tempted to subscribe to a "Knifemaking magazine" . Tips , Detailed "How to's",A monthly maker profile , etc.,etc. Yes , good idea !

use your finger IG use your finger  :D

I like the idea.
if you coupled up with KRAUSE PUBLICATIONS fnw

and get some Editors to follow some inside writers, I don't see a big problem doing it..Kim Breed, or Ed Fowler could give some insight I'm sure..
a How to in print done well, I'd think would go over well , there's no end to the volumes that could be printed..and collected there are thousands of us out here..

I just don't see Krause doing another knife magazine when Blade does have some knifemaking articles.

you never know unless you ask :D
if they think there's money in it they'll tell you I'm sure..:)

Personally, I would switch from Blade to a Knifemakers magazine. Most of the knifemaking articles that come out in Blade are old news to those of us who closely follow this forum and TKN.

me too or add it to the collection :)
new guys would eat these up as well as the older seasoned maker ..IMO
if there was DIY's in it start to finish segments by volumes
should make great reference text if done right..like wood workers illustrated
or machine shop illustrated ,, I love looking at those..segments on how to build stuff.. :)

Yesterday I was in Hobby Lobby (buying knifemaking stuff :D) and saw that they had a "Vogue Knitting International" magazine.

Lately, I have been debating whether I am going to renew my subscription to Blade. 'I jest lak to look at the pichures'-pretty much anyway. Most of the articles are old hat and I get much more from the forum here.

I have been a little put off by the rash of people that have been clogging up the shop talk forum lately with constant repetition of questions that any really interested newby would search out and read for himself.

Mike that shows you that any magazine will sell period :)

Steve the way I look at it . the new guys that learn here can pass on what they have learned and we just need to keep them straight in their info :D

I've seen it happen with all of us right along it kind of engrains it in us :)
but I know what you mean when you hear ,, who chromes your knives to get than mirror finish  :D

I think its a great idea....i get blade mag. and see things in there all the time and say "Thats nice....but HOW do they do that?" i would be interested....and help if I could...even a big book like a "machinist handbook" but only for knife making...have thought about that myself...

A knifemaking magazine would sell if for only one reason. Portability.

When I go to work I cannot take my computer nor use the one there.
When I am in the car on long rides.
When I am in the john taking a ...
When I am in the waiting room of the doctor's office.
When I forget to pay the internet bill.....

etc.

That is why I love books. I used the internet to get started and I could have only used the internet as reference. But then I'd be in front of the computer instead of in the shop with book or magazine in hand.

I'd still subscribe to Blade and Knives Illustrated for more references and a way to advertise to the knife buying public but a Knifemaker magazine would be my first priority.

Oh, BTW it should be a magazine with glossy images and detailed illustrations and not a 'trade' newspaper.
