A Knifemaking Magazine --

If you guys get it into print, I can most likely get it in every public and academic library in the country via one of our company's proprietary secondary databases. I am a development project manager at the largest digital aggregator in the world. We put out peridodical databases of basically every printed currency and academic title in the world (like 18,000+ titles going back to volume 1, issue 1) in Ascii fulltext and .pdf.

Let me know if anyone needs a copy of the 1924 eastern swedish journal of ice fishing while naked, because im sure its in our library, haha!

Im not sure there would be enough market to drive this one, but i think electronic is MUCH more doable and could be handled by a relatively small group of people, a single dedicated server or hosted page, and guest authors. Offer it in .pdf format so people can print it and send it via an electronic feed or on the 'zine webpage itself.

I'm going to sit back with a few beers tonight and work up a layout plan --

So far, I've gotton a lot of support, and I really appreciate it.

How many knifemakers are there in the US? How many knifemakers live in your city or cities close to you?
Of those how many would buy a magazine like that and maybe subscribe?

I can give you some insight into retailing a magazine. 60% of the magazines you see in a store are never sold. They are returned and eventually charged back to the publisher. That is huge money. You don't make money in retail sales.
Getting rack space costs a placement fee from most distributers. If you don't pay the fee, your magazine doesn't get placed into a retail rack slot. If you don't get into a retail slot, you don't get subscriptions and that's the only way you can make money.

I wouldn't even consider a monthly. Maybe a quarterly might get some where. A monthly would be financial disaster. There are not enough knife making suppliers for the advertising.

After all that, I hope you get one off the ground. I'll be the first to subscribe and I'll pay in advance if that helps...
