This morning I was admiring a new Bark River Custom Bird and Trout knife. It was beautiful.

I was checking out the feel of the knife--balance, quickness, different positions, etc.--while talking with my wife. Then it happened ... the knife slipped out of my hand (dumb, dumb, dumb). Before I could think, my cat like reflexes (LOL) went into action and I caught the knife on the way down. :jerkit:

The Custom Bird and Trout is an excellent slicer. With almost no effort, it cut through all layers of skin. I quickly noticed my error in judgment--and pulled my hand back. A nice cut.

About 1.5 inches, full thickness. Lots of blood. Cut like a scalpel.

Stupid, Stupid.

A little superglue and I am all fixed up, but geeze...I should know better.

So, kids, never catch a falling knife! :D

thankfully I had boots on but I have dropped a knife only to have the ol' soccer foot trap reaction. the tip of my 710 stuck in my boot. not terribly deep but it would have hurt like hell on a bare foot. thank goodness for leather work boots.

take care of yourself go let a doc throw a couple of stitches in that cut would ya. with a full thickness cut you have to becareful with infection.

just blame the wife she 'distracted' ya right? lol j/k

After stumbling across this website a few weeks ago, I bought a Buck 110. Two lessons this newbie learned the first few days:
1. Never fondle your knife while lying on your back watching TV.
2. Never wipe fingerprints off the blade with your shirt while your still wearing it (I was sitting up and leaning over to do it and poked a hole in the hanging fold of my shirt).

Thanks for your posts. I don't feel so bad now.

Fortunately I overestimated its length--1 inch. and it was only full thickness in the middle--superglue has it good for now. I cleaned it out well (and painfully I might add)

You spend all that time makin sure your knife is sharp....ready for anything, and how does it pay ya back? I tell ya.

Well just be happy it was not worse.

Sounds like that custom Barkie Bird and Trout is a menace, Derrick!

Better send it to me immediately for your own (and everyone else's) protection!

I'll even pay the shipping to get that dangerous knife out of circulation!

John

Tracker2, I have a whole bunch of "knife" shirts now. The ones I wiped my blades with. I tell the wife we got moths and they're eating up all of my shirts. Call the exterminator.:D

Ooh, I did the same thing once, only the blade went through the webbing between my middle and ring fingers, severing an artery and requiring 5 or 6 stitches.

That was not a good day.

Newgraham knows its customer base the last couple of times I purchased from them included with my new knives was a refrigerator magnet band aid despenser. printed on the dispenser it read "here you are gonna need these" lol:D how true!

:o:o:o Last week, I was "stropping" my 710 D-2 on the leg of my denim trousers. I now have a pair of Wrangler "cut offs," and a 2 inch long extremely clean incision in my thigh that looks like it was made by a doctor's scalpel!

Thank goodness I had just washed the blade with soap and water after sharpening, and the "pants leg stropping" was the final step before putting it in my pocket. No infection. But it did require 4 stitches to close.

Yeah, we all have "an attack of stupid" every now and then!

you were stropping wrong :p

yeah, you should be stropping on the inside of the bare thigh, right over the femoral artery! (using rapid flailing motions) :D

Knife tshirt? Yup
Knife pants? Yup
Knife toe? Yup (Picture this, bread knife heading to the floor, reflex kicked in and broke the fall with my foot. Serrated bread blades make an interesting cut pattern! :p )

Do you guys take any antibiotics for these deep stabs or gashes? I had to have a fish hook removed once and they highly recommended them to prevent infection.
