A lesson well learned

How about swiss army knives? If people freak-out over a swiss army knife does that mean the person carrying it wasn't "demonstrating common sense and discretion"? In post #5 MacCairnie said that people have freaked out after he used a swiss army knife to cut an apple, was he showing a lack of "common sense and discretion"?

I've had a similar experience. I take my Victorinox Cadet with me to university and to places where I work. Usually nobody even notices it when I use it, sometimes they like it and ask where I bought it, whereas some want to use it. Last year however, during an internship at an advertising agency, some new posters and boxes with flyers arrived from the copyshop. The boss needed a hand and couldn't find the box cutter so I said, hey I'll take my knife. Took out the cadet, opened the boxes et voila. He didn't really comment negatively on it, but kept asking me during the rest of my internship if I felt unsafe and if that was why I was carrying a knife, so I could defend myself against robbers or something. Mind you, a Victorinox Cadet... as a self defense tool :'). Some people are just clueless. Instead of saying thanks for opening the boxes, he was wondering if I felt unsafe.

Unsafe? No, he was putting you in your place, and ran with it.

Some people feel unsafe around others who are independent of their control. You can get a feel for it from the first put down they come up with.

I have a life and a job, the assistant manager I frequently work with lets me run on a long leash, I do what needs to be done and we get off work on time as a result. On the other hand, another guy who closes nights has to micromanage things, and can't get them all done. He is constantly on me to conform to his sense of correctness, too.

The concept comes from applied psychology thru the LEO and conflict study, which is summarized pretty well by the title, Monkey Dancing. https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/ccm-columns/features/social-violence-the-monkey-dance/

It's not about the knife, it's about social dominance. The knife is just an excuse.

Did I mention the Streetbeat in a MercHarness on my weak side and my trusty ZDP Delica SE in my waistband? :)

p.s. I went to a local cobbler and he rigged me a strap 'n snap setup that works great -- cost me ten bucks. It won't be coming out now!

No doubt I should have been more careful--I had been lulled into a false sense of security due to carrying the knife many times since I purchased it. The sheath is well executed, the loops just lowered a bit with the weight of the handle and allowed it to slip out. I had the cobbler do another fixed blade for me this weekend. Thanks to all the forum members who shared their thoughts--I truly appreciate your taking the time -- I will learn from any body at any time and be glad for it! :)
Cheers
