A little bit of help if you may.

Greetings to all,

I am currently trying to get into this hobby but I am finding it difficult because it seems that my city is very limited in supplies. By this I mean that I am unable to find certain materials, such as insulation wool like Durablanket, Kaowool, Inswool or anything like it available that I know of that is cost effective and relatively close. Or would it be better to start with a refractory firebrick forge?

I am also unsure of where to get metals, other than NJ Steel Baron and Canadian Knifemaker Supplies but that will come later. Right now I am using Nicholson files as that is the most common form of usable metal nearby.

So my question is where do I buy my materials from that is accessible for a beginner in Ontario?

Thank you for your help in advanced.

In the past, I've found that Larry Zoeller (zoellerforge.com) has better prices on inswool than HTT. Don't know if he ships to Canada, though...

While no one seems to be in love with Canada Post, the best way to get materials is still by mail. Find a supplier you like, and order from them a couple times a year. Larger parcels make for better economy.

It's tough finding supplies in Canada

If you want insuwool for forge making

http://www.pshcanada.com/kilnbuild&repair.htm
http://www.pshcanada.com/order.htm

They are in Ontario, contact them to find your most local supplier that stocks that stuff.
They do ship too.

Steel is more difficult.

O1, D2, A2 are standard industrial tool steels, every fastenal, can get those as precision ground flat stock

If you want 1084 which is suited to simple HT

Aldo

or

Canadian knifemaker resells it in Alberta and you at least don't have to cross the border, but the price per inch more than doubles and you still pay for shipping

Thank you all for your input.

Welcome to Shop Talk.

Most of what you are looking for can be found here:

http://www.hightemptools.com/supplies-mainpage.html

I'll also suggest you spend some quality time working your way through the stickies and the Count's "standard answer". He should be along shortly if you haven't encountered it already. Best wishes as you get geared up!

I find HTT to be expensive with shipping and handling, $45.40 for a single lineal foot of 1".
I have read through, and saved, some of the stickies.

I have very little love for Canada Post as some of my parcels have been damaged or "lost", but I will still try as you suggest.

Thank you. I will probably be buying my insulation materials from PSHCanada.
I will start on 1084 then work my way up to different steels once I have perfected my techniques.

I will try both Aldo and Knifemaker.ca to see who is cheaper and faster to arrive.
