I have the whole week off, but can't do much as my kids babysitter also took the whole week off! But today was the wife's day off so I got to spend some time in the woods.

So off to the River bottom I went, that would be the Platte River.

Really didn't set out with a purpose, just my .22 and my day pack and I figured if I shot something all the better.

Right off the bat got one cottontail, which is great, but then I had to carry it around all day!

I had come across one of these lean tos last winter while out in this area, but today I found 4 total. One even had a really nice fire pit in front of it.

by the looks of all of them they have not been used by any one in quite sometime. I do believe that is about to change!

I practiced a little firecraft, using the Mors twig bundle method, with some scrapings and shavings to get it started with my firesteel.

And cooked up some noodles and polish dogs for lunch.

Saw alot of geese, and a few deer and alot of river bottom.

Can't say I know a thing about them, just that by the looks of them they have been there for quite sometime and no one is using any of them. I would say a some type of government agency put them in at one point as alot of work went into building them. Hell they are even lined with pea gravel. And its not like they are right off the road, they are in some really thick cedar groves.

really cool that they are still there, here in BC they would have been burned down by drunks....... :foot:

you can use a little paracord to sling uncleaned tails from your side on your belt or carry a coupal of platic bags to put gutted or cleaned cottontails in your daypack. hand carrying is fatiguing.

Cool pics, I love to hike along rivers. Since I moved from the farm this year. I have been really hiking along the little blue river near town. That is where I got my leanto

Neat leantos.

Brandon, are there a lot of others that hike in that area also?
When you are out and about, do you see any others?

Chat with you later,

Bryan

Nice pics man, that lean to is cool. Is the Turley 3/16? Mine is 1/8. Those suckers are handy.

any pics of how to field dress that rabbit?

No sorry, didn't want to get the camera nasty. Maybe next time.

Oh I didn't actually carry it by hand the rest of the day, it was lashed to my pack with paracord. But still a pain!

Depending on the time of year, if deer season there are people every where. In the summer and middle/late winter I will be the only one on there, which is about 12 miles of river bottom ground.

Yeah 3/16. And one of the few that are full convex and not varied.

Nice thread and nice shooting on the bunny! Looks like a great place to camp.

those lean-to are WAY overbuilt, we're talking lumber!!! 4x4's for header/post outter frame:eek:

that does seem like some government project or something, maybe even scouts....

did you eat the rabbit??

did you take the arrow?

I gifted the rabbit to a friend that had been wanting one.

And no I left the arrow as it was aluminum and it was cracked from hitting the tree, and I would have had to cut the tree down to get that broadhead out as it was in really deep.

I was wondering about deer season in your area. I bet you just a bout can step on each others toes lol.

Is that 12 miles one way or 6 miles and then you cross the river at some point
and then walk back down the other side?
Mine is roughly 1/2 mile and then I can cross a bridge and then I have a bout a mile long on the other side to walk a round in. at some points it gets to be about 3/4 of mile wide in some areas. Most folks do not even walk in that area. Which is great for me:) Then I do not have to meet and chat
anybody lol.

Being that we are only a couple of hours from each other the pics of your area look so much like mine. But your river is alot wider than mine lol.

Chat with you later,

Bryan

Looks like a great day out, thanks for sharing it with us !

It's made me crave rabbit now, I've not had any in years, my mother-in-law used to make a mean rabbit pie !
