A little excessive?

I'm just kind of amazed by the number of shiny unused knives I see on here hacked into a tree stump in a fist grip for a photo.

Now you're talking about a different subject: Collecting.

Is that what your main point is? Collecting vs. Using?

I'm not trying to be rude or offend you, but I have to wonder if you know what your point is. I think I understand what you're driving at which is basically: "Why carry so much stuff that appears--to me--to be useless unless Armageddon decides to occur while you are out shopping?"

Which is basically best answered by saying: There really is no concrete reason that you would understand, other than it's their personal preference. The "Condom Principle," like I said.

Don't feel bad, I once had the same question about Sebenzas...("Why would you spend 400 dollars on a pocket knife?" and then my wife helped me to understand with the question: "Why did you spend 100 dollars on one?"--then I understood completely.)

Sheeple, Sheeple, Sheeple, Sheeple, Sheeple, Sheeple. ::takes off running::

I don't think I carry very much. In the city I have a folder on me, a wallet and a cell. In the car I have a first aid pack (mandatory anyways) which I've customised to be more user friendly, sometimes a handgun, a small fixed blade, an old sweater, a wind breaker and a picnic blanket. I added a fire set because one discovers that people tend to forget firestarters at barbeques. I always have a couple of mineral water bottles in the car they get replenished all the time. All of it I've used.

When hiking or mountain biking I take a lightweight first aid kit (basically just some band aids and cleaning liquid), one small fixed or a sak, again the cell and some money. I have a more comprehensive pack that also includes some medicines and antibiotics but this one only comes out on long "car" trips into malaria areas. This one is set up in modular fashion, I can take parts of it if I deem it necessary.

I find some PSK or BOB shown in this forum being well over the top but its a hobby that doesn't hurt anybody and can be very helpful WTSHTF. What people carry on them can be far too much though, speed is usally more important than having every single gadget available on the market.

I admit I own too many knives but I do love knives. In my defense I have to say I don't carry them all at the same time (too heavy).

Some people do carry "excessive" gear (10" chopper on a day hike?) but it's really not my concern, if someone wants to lug around a cumbersome amount of stuff that they dont truly need, well what ever floats your boat. I'm not going to try and tell them otherwise unless they're coming along with me and there's a chance I'm going to have to carry their crap, or take too many stops to rest and adjust their over burdened packs. If someone wants to fill their pockets with EDC survival kits, what do I care? It's not my thighs that will be chafing.

Now getting off topic, is it just me or has there been a trend growing of crying troll when ever someone has a dissenting opinion? It's right up there with the folk who post "first" in reply to new threads for things that make me go

Call me a sheeple if you like!

The term "sheeple" actually applies to a person who believes whatever the government and establishment media tell them, not necessarily someone who is not into preparedness. It is possible (though not likely) to be a survivalist and a sheeple and it is also possible (and common) to be a person who thinks for himself but has no interest in preparedness.

My personal EDC for the past few weeks has been an Emerson CQC-7B, and on my keychain an Emerson LaGriffe, a BSA Hotspark, a P-38 for a striker, and a Victorinox Huntsman. I keep a Mini Maglight in my jacket pocket. The list is long but this doesn't take much space. I know kids who carry game systems EDC and those compact systems take more space than this stuff.

People who post "first" to threads make you go bald? Hmm. I would consider consulting a doctor about that.

:D :p

G'day Evan

Your right, my knives still look shiny (scratched up, but still shiny).

It's amazing how modern stainless steels keep their shiny look after years of use

Kind regards

i used to carry a ton of gear around with me in a backpack...that lasted for about a week. i got tired of carrying around 10 pounds (literally) of gear i realized i never used.

i have been paring it down ever since then. as of today, i had in my pockets:
Stockman (slipjoint knife)
lighter (similar mechanism to zippo)
wallet
watch (need to get a new strap)

BUT, i am often carrying a bag with other goodies in it, from glasses (i'm a bit near-sighted) to extra knives and firestarting kits and tableware and food and...you get the point.

i try to keep it sensible (just how likely is it that i'm going to actually need this?) but i often carry far more than "most" people.

most of the people that i associate with walk around with empty pockets...99% of the time!!!!

sometimes i'm jealous, but i realize that the stuff i weigh myself down with is based on experience knowing what i typically need, and what can help me in a number of emergencies; from mundane (a hangnail! :grumpy:) to apokolyptic...

anyways, i suppose what i'm trying to say is that i somewhat agree that there is alot of excess in the gear choices around here, but as has been mentioned in this thread; alot of it is just for fun.

some people build model airplanes, some people play videogames, and some people like to play with knives and little gadgets...

i figure at least our hobby will help us in case the world ends, which i suppose is more than i can imagine for the model airplanes...;)

well now hold on there, :) if you saw the terrain trees and bush where i dayhike, you would carry a 10" chopper too......

plus

i tend to plan my outings AROUND the knives/choppers, because i enjoy going ot and using them.....hence why i often carry a pile of blades...

ymmv of course.

I tried to combine these but the model glue made me woozy so I cut myself on my knife while reaching for my Xbox controller.

If only my EDC PSK had a FAK for my BRKT, GEC or SAK wound. WTF? I guess I'm SOL.

I have heard the term "sheeple" applied various different ways and I don't believe there is an official definition to consult...

But I do agree that your EDC is well within the range of what I would consider reasonable and normal. It's pretty similar to what I carry myself, and obviously I don't think I'm being unreasonable or I wouldn't do it.

I have seen the occasional person, however, whose claimed edc includes, for instance, Hemcon bandages, a CAT tourniquet, three fixed blades, five flashlights...

At that point I feel like I'm totally within reason to say yes, that's a bit ridiculous for EDC. If you want to carry it all, go ahead...but you should not need a 3500 cubic inch backpack to go for a walk around the block.

But I have not seen very much of that on this forum.

again, sorry if ive offended anyone...thats not my point. Most of you have great legitimate posts IMO. I'm not saying don't carry any survival gear...just saying that what I tend to see on this forum is a bit excessive from my standpoint. Again, I don't have to deal with tornados, floods or catastrophic earthquakes so I may be out of my element. I'm used to lush rainy rainforest where temps range from 50-85 degrees, a 10" chopper is a neccesary essential. As is some way to start a fire and get out of the rain.

EDC I can totally understand the desire for a pocket knife, lighter/ferro rod, flashlight, leatherman etc...These are all totally functional tools for every day situations. But I guess some people here are preparing for some sort of SHTF event and packing items that again IMO aren't that useful in an everyday situation.

I am done posting in this thread as I think I have gained the knowledge I desired from bringing up my point. Again, I thank you all for the knowledge I have gained here.

Aloha

man, this used to be a place where guys were welcomed, and given the benifit of the doubt. And their questions were mostly awnsered without insult. After reading some of the replies, its no wonder he got pissy.

evbouret- Most guys here collect gear, and enjoy buying knives and testing them out and comparing them to others. I own quite a few blades, I use em all, but they might look new in pics, because alot of the pics guys post on here are when they wanna show off a new blade. So later on when someone asks for a reccomendation on a knife, people will post pics of their blades for referance, and they just so happen to be the same pics of the new blade, when in reality it might be well used by then. As far as gear, whats excessive to some, is minimal to others. Its all in how comfy and well stocked you feel you need to be when off the beaten path.

Also some threads on here are gear evaluations. IE people will go on a hike for the sole purpose of testing some gear to evaluate, and pack alot to have more blades to compare etc....

Me, well I carry a fixed blade, a SAK farmer, and either my timbuk2 bag for dayhikes, or my pack for overnighters. A FAK, water bottle, PSK, Firekit, space blanket, and GSI mug, cordage, and what have you. Just IMO the basic setup im comfortable with. For EDC, its my game warden, SAK, lighter, and my RA Twisty light. Thats usually it.

Agreed - Thanks for taking the high road here.

I sometimes feel like I am being excessive, but it's because I take a lot knives and/or gear out with me because I want to test the things I have and see what works best for me.

Plus - I enjoy taking pics and sharing them with all the people here that have helped me increase my skills DRAMATICALLY since I've been a member.

no 3500 CI backpack here. All my stuff fits comfortably in my 4 pocket vest or in my MaxPed Jumbo with room to spare for the camera gear and lunch. :)
